But that major enlightenment or pushing the owner to a new level, fastest man down the mountain, etc. strikes me as placebo. There are differences at the margins in turnability, stiffness (good for going fast, bad for going slow), holding the edge, weight (most expensive are worst), fatness (slightly less maneoverable, but no big deal). The differences are only at the margins.

I have concluded it is like the Stradavarrius: repeated tests have proved audiences can not tell one from a good modern instrument worth 1% of the value, but people still kid themselves the Strad is worth it.

...

Am I missing something? Or is it really just marketing hype?

I've been through the purchasing loop with golf and cars and running shoes, and if I understand you correctly - that the magazines and industry are set up to sell you stuff you don't need - I completely agree. All leisure industries are run on the same basis; selling more stuff this year than last. Is the stuff measurably different from one another? Yes. Will the difference affect you? My answer is no, 99 times out of 100.

It's the indian, not the arrow; the driver, not the car; the skier, not the ski, and so on.

So my approach was to buy skis of the type I wanted, but not be overly concerned with this brand or that, this colour or that, etc.

Unfortunately this school of thought must break down somewhere, because I golf with exotic japanese imports and drive a Porsche.

"He has no more right to opt out law then I do to break speed limit, avoid tax, litter etc. "

People break the speed limit all the time, avoiding tax is perfectly legal and littering? Well I'm sure we all do that at some point but none of us get dragged off in cuffs and thrown in a cell.

Even if he has broken the law, it is perfectly legitimate for people to question the law.

Is the law correct?
Is it being fairly and evenly applied?

I think most people would agree that on this last point being a British ski instructor, rather than French, is a clear disadvantage to employment. Being in breach of the law, the French are not as harshly punished either.
Which resort?

"So far we've looked at Cervinia but been told all the runs look identical and very prone to bad weather."

I'd disagree, the weather is often better than Zermatt. And for intermediates - the runs that "look identical" are in fact the "wide, easy cruising blues and reds" that you're after.

I had a lot of fun in Cervinia last November. Good food, good wine, good skiers, good weather...

Anyone know what the story is behind the arrest of this British ski instructor in Megeve?

I'm prejudging the whole thing and starting a freedom campaign in this thread ;)

End to ski hosting in France

That's not the main point.

Tourism brings money into the country, regardless who it's spent with. And particularly for small businesses, getting it out again incurs fees and taxes - the host nation always benefits from increased trade and a net influx of cash.

Tourism or any other business has no moral goal, at least certainly no obligation based on locale, all business is solely to create wealth, national borders are basically an inconvenience.

It has a free upgrade to winter sports.
But it does not cover me off piste.
I want off piste cover.

If carre neige covers me then I think at £2 thats good value.

What happens if you're on piste when the accident starts, and off piste when it ends?
