Whilst on a summer holiday the general concensus amongst locals and expats was that you had to have at least two jackets (even if your in the car on your own) and they should be visible from the outside of the car - hence most people fitted them to the back of the driver and passenger seats.
Travelling alone ... UPDATE

I've been on my own to Austria before, to a hotel. There was another single bloke staying there so we were put together at dinner and went out to a couple of bars and clubs one or two nights. Wouldn't want to risk it in a country where I didn't speak the lingo though, and probably wouldn't go hotel again, as the chalet option sounds better for meeting people.

As for the ski-ing, I found I preferred to go with the SCGB for the first couple of mornings, then either skied off on my own or with people i'd skied with on the first days. Some of the SCGB reps are a little stricter than others with regards to letting non-members ski with them, and it tends to depend how many members they have with them. I've met a couple that were happy for anyone English speaking to join them on piste however many members they were with.
Obergurgl has a single meeting point (or certainly used to before the new lift round that area). Hochgurgl may have a seperate meeting point but I'm not sure, I don't remember a ski school operating from there. I'll warn you that the instructors English may not be great, although you'll find that in a lot of Austrian resorts.

Snow sure and a great resort for couples and families, if you want decent nightlife after dinner you'll need to taxi to Soelden though.
