Thanks AndyHull.
Got me in the mood for the next ski-about 30 sleepovers! Hope the snow has arrived by then. Also, loved the music. Pole Plant |

Jan is a mile away in snow terms for January. It is already (today) snowing in Chamonix. Great town/resort and I feel sure that that when you arrive early Jan. you will have loads of snow. As a backup, Le Tour, locally accessible and very high will have snow. Have a blast! pole Plant.

Take a look at La Clusaz-only about 1 hours drive into France. Good area, fairly snow sure, nice town with fair amount of night life. Alternatively, Chamonix has to be in with a shout, also max. of 1.25 hours drive. Classic ski area with large town with lots of night life etc.La Thuile lacks atmosphere but if you are into Italy then Courmayer is great. Best of luck.

Been to La Thuile-sort of OK. Been to Champoluc 5 times-no contest-Champoluc it has to be.

Most French resorts are expensive (depending on your budget), but having skied Courcheval and Meribel they are fairly mega expensive thanks, in the main, to the large Russian influx where prices have been adjusted accordingly. Val D'Isere you would probably like, plenty of restaurants, some easy runs or look at Les Arc, not the prettiest place in the world but plenty of wide blues. I am thinking that as you have already been to Montgenevre that would, personally, be my choice from what you have asked for. Good luck.

Hi Sm4sh. Agree with Tony about France. Have skied La Plagne many times-good to excellent ski area and pretty snow sure in early January. They have the glacier there so skiing all year round! Prices in La Plagne can be a bit high but staying in a chalet can ease the pain! Have used both Crystal and Silver Ski who would come in your budget at that time of the year. Silver ski have some excellent chalets in Plagne Central with excellent access to all the other villages (plus Les Arc). Have a look at the websites. Also possibly worth considering is Italy with Gressoney and Champoluc good and very reasonably priced. Let us know how you get on.

Been a couple of times to Wengen. Traditional Swiss resort with lots of charm. Some old lifts, some slow trains, some new lifts so getting about speedily can be unpredictable. Prices can be very high (this is Switzerland) but nonetheless a charming place. You mention the possible cold in January-well, most ski resorts are cold in January but there would be higher and colder resorts at this time of the year. e.g. Saas Fee/Zermatt. Haven't been to Adelboden but if the FIS are training there that week then you can be assured that some runs will be blocked off for their exclusive use. Finallt if you are looking for a lively night life then Wengen is suited to the (shall we say) more mature skier. Best of luck wherever you go.

Probably Tignes your best bet-got the height/lifts/etc. and not too far from Geneva. Be prepared to be on the lifts by 8 to 8.30am and probably finish by 1 to 2 pm latest. Staying in Tignes can be expensive, especially in the summer months, consider staying down the road a couple of miles in Tignes les Brevieres-B&B, hotels etc. half the price of Tignes itself. Good luck.
