Most of you got all the answers right... and that's a good thing! We all need to continue to take care this season; there's a lot of snow in the mountains and we will be seeing more big avalanches like those we've heard about in the past couple of weeks. Stay safe!

Any of those three should be good in April. Chamonix town should be a bit warmer by then and is a really nice place to be in the Spring, although the other two might have the edge on the amount of skiing (sorry, boarding) still available.

Not much to choose between them though, really.

If you're pretty handy on the board then maybe Chamonix and Tignes are the better options, otherwise Tignes and VT may suit an intermediate a little better.

Good time to be given a week off work though! :D

cstodd wrote:Fantastic link, thanks! So, it seems to be basically the same as 'variable'...more or less...

Kind of... the good old "variable conditions" to me means that they vary from one slope to another; whereas Spring skiing is more about conditions varying (on the same slopes) during the day.

With Spring conditions you expect the mountain to start off hard (maybe icy) and transform through the day.

As Pavel's excellent post alludes, you never quite know what you're going to get from one run to the next. I love Spring skiing, personally, because of that variety.

Each run, or slope, has a "sweet spot" at some point between icy and slushy - and the time that sweet spot is in play will change according to the sun (or not), the aspect and orientation of the slope, etc... and the fun is moving round the mountain trying to hit each slope at the right moment.

Great fun... and you know if it's Spring conditions that it'll be warm enough to sit outside in the sun with an ice cold beer at the end of the day too... 8)

Picky, picky... millstreet just needs to turn left out of the airport rather than right...
Temperatures dropped dramatically overnight, across most of the North and Eastern Alps... and came with a little snow.

NNIXSY's already reported new snow in Les Menuires, and here's a shot from Chamonix town (avec neige) just now...

Looking around the webcams this morning; the snow has not got everywhere yet, although quite a few ski areas in Austria, France and Switzerland are either white or showing cloud/fog.

There looks to be fresh snow in Megeve, and here in Arosa also...

And snow on the trees in Manigod, near La Clusaz (all the La Clusaz cams appear to be fogged-out at the moment!)...

...any more snowy shots out there?
