26th:
http://www.lenouvelliste.ch/fr/suisse/avalanche-a-verbier-une-famille-avec-deux-enfants-s-en-sort-494-217674 Off piste in the Lac de Vaux - Mt.Gelée area. Dad, Mum and two kids 16 and 13 set off an avalanche which carried them away. Fortunately no serious injuries. I'd say that this is a warning not to be complacent just because the weather conditions have improved. It must have seemed a good idea at the time. But I doubt that the two helicopters, doctor, rescue guides, three dog rescue teams and 15 ski patrol would necessarily agree ..... |

"Debate over. "
Certainly not because you say it is. The debate will continue because it's a proposition that can't be resolved. As with seatbelts, there are always people who argue for freedom of action while others view it as a risk analysis: For the latter, the decrease in risk at not cost is what drives their decision. Which I think is a reasonable approach to life, even if it's not your own. |

A colleague is out there now at our apartment in La Tzoumaz and reports that there are huge amounts of snow already with more forecast the rest of this week. Five chalets in Verbier have been evacuated because of avalanche danger! Which I've never heard of before. By the time you go, the conditions should be perfect even if there's no more snow after this weekend.

Re Transfers: Take a look at the 'Ski Chatter' Thread on 'Geveva>Verbier-LaTzoumaz Transfer' comparing car hire with train/gondola and taxi/minibus. Looks like www.auto-europe.co.uk is a good site for car hire. Go to www.sbb.ch to work out price of train to Le Chable and then add a bit to get the gondola up from the station to Verbier. Minibus is competitive to train if you can fill it with 10x (www.taxialpina.ch is a good example) but taxi looks expensive, even if you can squeeze x4 in. There will probably be charter coaches to Verbier, but perhaps someone else can recommend a site for them? Car hire is OK if you have a parking space but Verbier parking is likely to be expensive. On foot is OK if you're accomodation isn't too far from Médran télécabine.

You're right - I'm not sure what happened there .. total is CHF 105 which is around £72 for an adult return. About the same as 1/10th of a 10-seater minibus. Using my discount card with Avis I got £250 for the 8 days VW Golf all-in. Train+bus is still cheapest approach for two people but the car would work better if it was 3 people and be cheaper if 4 of us.

Completely flush-out your screenwash and fill with 100% concentrate before you start off. Run the full concentrate through the pipework and nozzles at a convenient time ahead of the journey. Obviously, carry some concentrate as well.

Bandit: Yes, I'm seriously thinking of this as we usually manage to get out at least a couple of times in the winter and again in the summer. To date, it's worked out as break-even, although I'm sure if we have SBB cards, we'd do more summer train excursions. Thanks.

Ummmmm .... I've tried these 3rd-Parties before only to find that once they have my card details, they actually don't have any cars available at that rate after all. And then, like this site, don't include personal insurance, motorway vignette or winter tyres in the daily fee either. The only people with hire cars at GVA are the usual Sixt, Avis, Europcar etc and so I'm suspicious that they can discount by 50%-65%. But perhaps I'm doing them a disservice. Have you used these people?
