I'm a Switzerland fan and have skiied France and the USA a fair bit. I'd agree about the Ski Club of GB - I think there's a big bias in their reporting, for whatever reason. Big thing to remember is that most Europeans book direct with rental agencies - it's only us Brits who seem to go in for packages in such a big way. The package companies really just concentrate on places with a lot of hotel beds. The basic cost in £/Sq.M in Switzerland is actually lower than in France with a higher build quality - so this tends to make for 'better' accomodation: apartments also tend to have central heating and hot water in CH rather than electric radiators and an undersize immersion. So why not do what the Europeans do and book direct in one of the connected resorts, where the local tend to have/rent their apartments?

Nendaz is rather isolated because it relies on a single telecabine to connect to the 4 Valleys, and a non-trivial black if you want to ski back. It's also somewhat over-developed in relation to the lift capacity. La Tzoumaz is much less well-known but now has a high-speed telecabine to the summit between it and Verbier. It has 55Kms of its own skiing and you can ski or telecabine into Verbier in 20 minutes and happily ski the 200Kms or so of Verbier until about 3.30pm before you have to think about returning. La Tzoumaz is mainly apartments for rent - typically about £600/week for a 2-bedroom place with underground parking.

La Tzoumaz: There's a new high-speed teleacbine built this summer from La Tzoumaz to Savoleyres that takes only 9 minutes. From there it's 20 minutes down to Verbier (skiing or by the telecabine). It may be worth considering accomodation in the much cheaper La Tzoumaz but you'd have to be willing to stay over in the village. 2 bedroom apartment is around £600 for a week, More importantly, there may be more flexibility about bookings. Go to www.latzoumaz.ch and follow the links to the agencies.
