Lizzie,
You must be losing the second square bracket or something.

Try just finding a post and clicking on the quote box in that post (before you click reply) and you should find that the message box appears. Then try clicking on preview to make sure you've got it okay.

I tell you what though, all this messing about with this stuff has shown me how to put a line under a post I'm writing, to separate the text should I so want, like this

You just do the square brackets with forward slash and quote inside them.

I expect there are loads more of these sort of things we could do, if we knew how to do them. I was surprised to learn that my washing machine is programmable - like if you hold one button down and push another one it stops the machine pumping or whatever. The service engineer showed me - he has like a crib sheet for doing this.

He must have the "stay logged in" box ticked and in my fuzzy eyed condition did not notice

:D

Thanks for letting me know. That's one less thing I've got to worry about today

It's nice to know that you and your dad get on so well :D

Those log in things can be quite amusing. Last summer, I was home here logging on to my Facebook in order to stalk my younger daughter (who's 'friends' with me) whilst she was in Australia to make sure she was okay. And simultaneously my older daughter was on holiday in Turkey logging in to my Facebook so that she could send a message to her sister (who she's not 'friends' with because she got annoyed with all the silly messages she kept getting from her sister's friends). And, finally, my younger daughter was logged in to my Facebook from Australia because she likes playing on Restaurant City and she doesn't like her friends knowing she's addicted to it (not 'cool' I suppose).

The upshot of all this Facebook activity was that I received a message from Facebook saying that they'd closed my account as they thought it had been accessed by someone other than myself

I really laughed about this. Facebook is far too clever and it knows where you are when you are posting messages, and I suppose it came up as an anomaly that I was simultaneously in West Wales, Turkey, and Australia!

And it was easy enough to get my account going again - I just had to re-submit my password and things.

If you go to A&E dont tell them you have been back a couple of days otherwise it will be to the back of the queue!

Would the doc be a quicker option?

I think maybe different health authorities have their own policies on this. A couple of years ago I broke my toe ski-ing on the Thursday, still skied Friday and Saturday (because I didn't know it was broken), came home on Sunday and decided to go to the doctor's on Tuesday (because it had become infected).

But our surgery said that because the problem with my toe had originated with an injury they wouldn't look at it and I had to go to Casualty, where they lanced it, dressed it and gave me antibiotics. Mind you, after that I received the care for my toe in the surgery.

Best of luck Ian :D

I've always found, when attending Casualty, that it pays to think about what time to go, as sometimes they are pretty quiet (usually about 8 a.m. in our hospital) and other times they are exceptionally busy (like Friday and Saturday nights).

Iceman,
I don't get how you could have sent a message as someone else, unless they were already registered with J2Ski in that name and ticked the box to stay signed in so that when you used their laptop and went on to J2Ski it thought you were them. But I've never heard of Rob Howard. Whoever he is, I hope he's not belligerent, strong, black belt karate or whatever, and strongly objects to your post about pizza or whatever it was

I hope you didn't buy your car when you were under the influence. My husband's brother bought a cow once, in the mart, when he was in that condition - and you should have seen it when it walked out of the cattle lorry

Carve vs Flat wrt Speed

Another factor I forgot, is that when travelling at high speeds on snow with your edges flat friction is further reduced because frictional heating causes local surface melting of the snow which lubricates the contact area between the skis and the snow. I remember having to learn this for the effect of pressure melting when ice-skating.

But I think when you go on the edges of your skis the increase in pressure is too much for the (shear strength?) of the snow which causes it to break away from the snow underneath greatly increasing the coefficient of friction between the snow and the skis. You only have to think of how you can spray someone with snow whilst doing a hockey-stop!

I should imagine the mats on the dry ski slope must be designed so that if you are travelling on them on your flats then friction is minimum but as soon as you go on your edges the extra pressure makes the spiky mat bits give way so the skis 'fall' into them and friction is then greatly increased.

I'm not at all sure my theories are correct, but if they are then one would expect that going on your edges wouldn't make any difference if the snow was rock hard ice instead - and that was kind of what I experienced on that really hard glacial ice at Tignes. I found I couldn't brake or turn by digging my edges in.

Anyone got any more ideas on this? It's a very interesting question.
