I'm always waiting for Trencher to say 'And here's one I made earlier' like they used to do on Blue Peter

Trencher impresses me as well - he'd have made a very good farmer

At the moment I am just looking forward to Sunday - no work and a delicious lunch out in my favourite restaurant by the sea followed by a fantastic supper home cooked by my younger daughter who's specially coming home from uni, because it's Mother's Day

:D :D :D

Ian,
I thought you had a bad knee before you left? Or is this a new injury?

Anyway, I hope you get on okay in Casualty :D

Tony, if I had the money and time you wouldn't see me for dust

I think I'd head for that Ski Beat chalet Cristal in Val d'Isere reduced to £399 for the week starting 24th March.

The snow doesn't sound that bad at the moment - a bit slushy but what can you expect - maybe I'd get a few slush lessons

The leader of the VD Ski Club of GB said this yesterday:

Another sunny warm day . It was all about trying to hit slopes at the right time as they softened. We skied around Tignes, hit the Golf run and under Grande Huit at just about the perfect time. Observed some of the X-games over at Val Claret where it was rather crowded but then within less than an hour we were skiing the Sache run and some nice softened snow off the sides with no one else in sight. A late lunch then Familiel to finish another great day.

Weather forecast for the next 9 days is light snow, temperatures +2 to - 10. Sounds great to me :D

As I said before, maybe we should start another thread for those of us who'd like to go on another ski holiday but can't, and leave this one free for those who still have a great time ahead of them this season :D

Piste Bashing

Wanderer wrote:I was in La Plagne this year for the 1st week of January. We had nearly 1 metre of snow overnight on the Thursday. Friday was a beautiful sunny morning and while I fully understand that there would have been severe avalanche concerns, it seemed to me that they were slow to clear the snow from runs and get a reasonable bit of the resort open. I suspect that they were not too bothered beecause it was the end of that week and the following week would have been very quiet.

That may be understandable but it does nothing to make skiers want to return

Hi Wanderer,
In this particular instance I do know why the piste bashers were a bit slow getting into action. I was on holiday at the same time as you, in Meribel, and I got hold of Saturday's local paper. Apparently there was an enormous storm on Thursday night (5th January) and several avalanches which cut off electricity, and loads of roads were blocked by mud slides and snow. There were 400 people 'shipwrecked' in the Tarentaise that night - like 170 holidaymakers had to stay the night in the gym of a college in Bourg. And even the pisteurs had an awful job to get to work the next morning.

The electricity went off for a bit in Meribel, and I was standing in a queue for ages waiting for the lifts to start working again in the morning. And they had to blow up the pistes before they opened them. So I didn't get to ski until the afternoon, and even then it was only the lower pistes.

This is what the paper said about La Plagne (without the accents because I can't be bothered to put them in):

'Et enfin La Plagne, ou, apres une nuit digne du film "Le jour d'apres", les habitants se sont reveilles hier matin au son des plans de declenchement d'avalanche (Pida) et sous 50 cm de neige fraiche. Plusieurs coulees ont entraine la fermeture de la route reliant Belle Plagne et Plagne Bellecote" etc. etc.

So, in other words the whole area had a very bad time that night! I think in this case they can be excused from being a little slow in opening up the resort for ski-ing

I still have a copy of the paper if you want me to scan it in so you can read it.

Of course you can Andy

Where would you like to go :?:

There are some very nice, cheap, chalets here:

Maybe we should start another thread on virtual ski holidays we would go on if we could, each week, and see who can find the best bargain to the nicest place :D
