Trencher wrote:The strongest reason to replace ski boots (other than upgrading for ability) is wear to the heels from walking ...

Trencher,
I'm pretty sure that when I bought my ski boots the technician in the shop said the heels were replaceable as long as I didn't let them wear down too much before I brought them in. And what are 'cat tracks'? Are they cheaper than replacement heels? I didn't ask how much the shop charges to replace them.

And - to answer FallingDown's question - I don't spend much at all on ski gear because the ski holidays themselves cost me so much money that I don't have any to spare.

My ski jacket cost something like £25 reduced from £75 in Millets, and my salopettes cost around £30 from TKMaxx. I don't wear any special thermals - just normal tight fitting cotton leggings and tops which seem to work fine and I've been using the same ones for about ten years.

I think my goggles cost me around £40 but it was ages ago so I can't really remember. And I hire my skis. The only thing that was very expensive was my boots which I bought a couple of years ago, and I think they cost around £450 including special insoles and about 3 hours checking my feet etc. to make sure they fitted okay. Oh yes, and after everyone on here went on about how terrible tube socks are I bought a few pairs of the expensive fitted socks. And my gloves are cheap as well, but perfectly adequate at keeping my hands dry and warm.

I wouldn't buy any more stuff for myself unless something fell to pieces. And my daughter wears old stuff as well - her jacket and trousers look quite 'cool' now they are so beaten up

Unsure if they still exist? They were small and good, so I doubt it!

Ally I don't suppose the fact that you sacked his brother 2 weeks before the ski holiday had anything to do with it. )

Very funny Brooksy

I think it was simply because it was very much on his mind and I happened to be sitting there - a trapped audience as it were. There was no logic to his argument - he was just angry and upset. And, of course, I WAS on the ski holiday whereas his brother wasn't.

Tony,
I can't remember exactly how his argument went. I just remember he was very angry with me and I hadn't done anything. It was something to do with regional unemployment and the unfair way money is distributed geographically in this country.

Basically I suppose he was just cross that his brother wasn't there and he decided to take it out on me. Anyway I did a pretty good job of convincing him that it wasn't my fault and at the end of dinner he invited us to have drinks with him at the bar. Naturally I wasn't at all keen on that idea so I made some excuse and we ran away.

And there was another man I was talking to in the chalet who droned on and on about what fantastic skiers he and his daughter were. I'm afraid I couldn't tell you the details of that conversation either as I carefully channelled most of it straight from one ear to out the other one but the upshot was that he felt his daughter was ready to start training as an instructor herself.

Anyway, the joke was that he and his daughter were having coaching lessons and we had a lesson afterwards with the same instructor. So I was very naughty and I asked the instructor if they were really brilliant skiers and he said that actually my daughter and I were pretty much up to the same standard as them except that they were a bit faster. And I am by no means a brilliant skier, although my daughter is pretty good.

Rose,
There was an awful man we had to share a table with once, in a chalet in Tignes. He decided, for some reason I forget - maybe because I am English, that I was responsible for his brother losing his job which was why his brother wasn't with him on the ski holiday. And it took me the entire length of dinner to persuade him otherwise. We sat somewhere else afterwards.
