La Plagne is very extensive in its own right so it might be enough to keep you happy for a week. However, if you are skiing everything, you might find yourself frustrated if you cant get across to the other side on a couple of occasions. Have a look at the official website - they offer a range of passes including the possibility of 1 day in the other resort. Make sure to look closely at the small print to see if you can upgrade your passes during the week (probably not - but worth checking).
The cablecar does not usually have too long a queue but it can take a while to get to the heart of the resorts from each other - my recollection is that it took 2 or 3 lifts just to get to the cablecar from La Belle Plagne and its another 2 or 3 to get into the heart of Les Arcs. I didn't think the trip was worth doing too often because of this. Another thing to bear in mind is that conditions can be quite different in the two resorts even though they are right beside each other. I recall one trip where the snow in Les Arcs was much better than La Plagne. |

Even if you can find a good mount, I would be wary of doing so. I have a GoPro and am constantly banging it off lift bars. It is in a sturdy case and so this does not matter too much. Given that an iPhone 7 would be bigger and more delicate, I am not sure it would survive the experience  . Also you might want to have a look at operating temperatures for the phone - if it was a cold day, prolonged exposure to the weather could lead to problems.

Do you not get it? Everybody is back at work after the Christmas break, depressed and looking for something to cheer them up . Anything to do with snow will work for most people on here

I would add my vote for the Dolomites. It is a truly vast area and allows for some very interesting itineries. Also lovely food and reasonably priced.

Hi Dobby. As I am sure you know Ellmau is part of the very large Skiwelt area. I love the area but usually stay in Soll when visiting so cant help you with info on the village. Soll offers better apres ski (I think). The skiing is primarily on-piste with a vast number of runs - over 100 according to the piste map. However, the runs do tend to be relatively short but with lots of variety. It is interesting to traverse the ski domain and does give you a nice sense of going on a journey. Worth heading out to the margins to get away from the crowds, if there are any!
A couple of stand out runs that I can recall are 1,2 and 2a located near the Hohe Salve mountain. These are two reds and a black are usually quiet and in the right conditions can allow for some seriously fast cruising. A day over in Westendorf is also worth doing. Most of the skiing over there is not too taxing but the run to the valley can be very tricky, even unpleasant if conditions are poor. Its rated Red but I would regard it really as a Black. Overall, it is a great area and good value too. Lunch, beers, etc, all very reasonable. The tiroler Grostl (or something like that) is great ski lunch fare - basically fried potatoes and chopped up beef and ham with a fried egg on top. |

Renting car in Switzerland

It is probably highly unlikely that you would be stopped but if you are the consequences can be horrible. In my view not worth the risk. I have switched my plans to fly to Munich because of this - it will mean a longer journey to resort but worth it for peace of mind. Car hire is much cheaper as well so that is some compensation .
As you are hiring from Geneva (French side of airport?) you may be able to get a French registered car and then no problem (as long as you don't want to drive in Switzerland as well! |

The good news for us Irish members of the site is that our Euro is still worth a Euro in Austria, France, Italy, etc.

Thinking about a short trip in late March. St Anton or Ischgl would obviously have the advantage in terms of the extra height but are further from the airport (flying to Munich) and are more difficult to get short term accommodation. Any views on how Mayrhofen would compare that late in the season? I know the Hintertux is just up the valley so at least some decent skiing guaranteed.
