Accuracy of J2Ski's Powder Alarms
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 27 Replies
Just imagine they under-estimated, you cancelled and went to the beach - disaster. Even though I know the 14 day forecast is effectively a nonsense there is a certain addictive element to looking and seeing an apocalyptic amount of snow might be heading your way.

If I ran my life on a computer model it would probably conclude a high probability of waking up tired, body won't seem very willing = best stay in bed. Skiing is about the small probability that some trips, some days, some runs everything comes together and you get that bottomless bounce feeling and shot blasts. I would conclude this happens less than 5% of days I ski. By that measure as long as the 14 days forecast is no worse that 95% inaccurate I am in.
Improving Helmets and Goggles

Completed but didn't really get where it was going.

I ski with helmet and goggles 100% of time, don't really see how you can ski without them. The only real annoyance is that you need to keep goggles in place I.e. if you get tempted to remove goggles on lift and foam gets wet then you are done.
Accuracy of J2Ski's Powder Alarms

I would say the powder alarms and 24hr forecast undersestimate snow fall in a Chamonix (only one ever look at). Presumably because they take mid mountain estimates. With upto 1500m elevation the top lifts seem to get between 50 and 100% more snow.
Long term j2ski forecasts are often more optimistic that what resort itself is predicting but that is nature of forecast models. No point getting too excited until snow is in the 2-3 day window.

Is a top ski resort, for some reason people believe is too small for a week. Has more than enough to keep even the strongest skiers occupied.
Re-inserting Boot Liner

You should put boot liner on foot and then step into boot. As someone with laces on my liners this is an everyday necessity.

You might also want to take some duct tape with you skiing. Lange boots in particular see to have almost no overlap of the plastic shell below toe buckle. If you are skiing any sort of powder then is almost inevitable you will get cold wet feet if you don't take this precaution.

Of course Dave Mac's solution is probably the easiest. You just need to be old school to know where to get your hands on a set of rear entry boots. Blizzard of Aaahhs.
Add a resort

Off to Azerbaijan / Shahdag in 3 weeks. On paper only 17km but have a feeling that with touring skis and right weather could be a gem.

Austrian Apline club, good for all you piste, offpiste and climbing activities.
Looks like you guys nailed it with resort and week. In a pretty poor winter to date, certainly looks not too shabby!
