Well, obviously there are some lines on the weekends and peak holidays. But there is still plenty of untracked stuff all the time off-piste. Also; the town and area are still quaint and Japanese; unlike Niseko. Plenty of good deals abound in all price ranges and for all ability levels.

After the recent Australian invasion into Niseko scared off some of the long-time happy returners; it's about time the powder hounds came back to J-land and got some of the fluffy stuff again. Hakuba has long been known of; after all; the 1998 Winter Olympics were held here; but people seem to prefer the mellow slopes and guaranteed snow of Niseko. Average snowfall in Hakuba: 12m/year!! And there is actually steep terrain here; unlike Niseko. (best you carry a beacon and take an avalanche course before going into the back country!)
I don't want to see my private paradise overrun like Niseko was. But surely we can have a happy medium that will help the dire local economy?! |
