Gareth Fair wrote:Thanks Ise,great pictures and Zermatt looks like an opton but just mabey that bit long of a drive from Geneva for the weekend.

Tony,I like the idea of Tignes too.Its high and 79 quid seems like a great deal too.

Any details Ellestine?

Zermatt's closer to Geneva than Tignes, it's about 10km further in terms of distance but the roads are better. That's moot anyway as you'd really want to be getting the train that leaves from Geneva airport.

Gareth Fair wrote:I am off to Meribel next week for my second week this winter but lets be honest, I need more!
The only extra time off i can get is a long weekend on about the 4th of April.I have never skied this late before so need some guidence on where to go.
We will fly to Geneva,Grenoble or anywhere that Ryanair will fly to from Dublin.
I was thinking of france again but would like to go somewhere else as i have only ever skied France or Italy and want to see more.
So if anyone has ideas for me I would be very gratefull.
Thanks...gar :D

On my Rossignol World Cup SL and GS skis I have a plate which has four such slots!

On my Salomon GS skis I have a LAB plate that has two such slots.

However you are correct "average" skiers who have no concept of what a plate does and have no technical knowledge should not play around with bindings.

yes, and those slots are there by design for exactly the reason I gave above, it's by design and they're not "over-torqued" or a problem in some way.

In that case I'm glad I was able to help and explain how those plates actually worked and why they're designed like that.

It's just worth some accuracy about something important and potentially rather dangerous.
Transfer to Grindelwald

bandit wrote:ise is quite correct, the train is preferable. You won't need your car in the resort, and it might cost you to park it up for your stay. If you want a Swiss Transfer Ticket, you must buy it before you arrive in Switzerland. The natives can't buy them...sorry ise )

why would we need to? we have half price cards that work everywhere everyday of the year )

With the exception of some of the VIST plates I don't think many bindings or plates control flex in that way, not Markers, Salomons or Tyrolias for sure. Even on the VIST systems flex control is via the VTECH system and even then the screws are not "over-torqued" if they're locked, it's a design feature to vary the flex of the ski for different users and is related to some FIS regulations.

Obviously you don't want to go messing around removing or loosening screws on your bindings unless you exactly what you're doing and understand exactly how your binding and plate works.

If you break your binding or it's badly fitted you can end up making your descent like this :-) :

It makes more sense to use the train, you can also get a "Swiss Transfer Ticket" that will cover the return journey.
Ski Length Formula

Dshenberger wrote:Obviously, the most common form of assigning length is in relation to height. The problem is: If you are a little bit out of proportion (weight - height) that concept can lead to issues. For example. I am 6'2" tall, so, most people would want to put me somewhere in the 180cm range. But, I only weigh 150lbs, so, a ski that long is very difficult to flex. I am on 168's that a wise shop person sold me, and I love them. I have skied some 174's that weren't too bad. I saw a site recently that had a neat chart that recommended ski length based on weight, then added length for skill. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I saw it.

Additionally, intended use will affect a length choice. But, that is rather obvious. :)

This chart maybe ? :

Dshenberger wrote:I skied a Metron 9 in 162 at a demo day, and had a blast!

does that work in the sizing chart? Metrons are a bit of an odd ski, love or hate sort of thing really.
