Snow chains

We did find out that our vehicle could not have snow chains anyway, so we are looking at possibly purchasing 'socks' instead! This time tomorrow we'll be 4 hours into the trip.... yippeee! 'Look out LP, we're a comin'!'

I doubt the police will let you pass with "socks" really, all the tests say they're totally useless. There's a number of low profile chains around that can fit problematic cars but you've probably left it too late now anyway. I doubt it's going to snow tomorrow so you should be fine and if it does as you leave you may just need to be patient.

By trendy mega resorts i am thinking Val & Tignes,The Trois Vallee's resorts,Zermatt etc,

Zermatt's a mountaineering town and has been for hundreds of years, I'm not sure it's quite accurate to lump it in with some large French stations.

What was it you didn't like about Zermatt?

Zermatt or Saas Fee would be OK, Saas is probably better for beginners maybe.

Portes du Soleil is a non starter for those dates, Avoriaz will close on the 20th and the other stations will probably have given up before then.

You probably need to narrow down a little first though, with such an open ended question you'll not get a good answer, I doubt anyone has a list in their head of all the stations still open at that time.

With the exception of summer glacier skiing:

1)What's the latest it's usually possible to plunder Europes slopes?
2)Where are the best places for late late skiing?

May 28th is the plan, ski from the Jungfrau to Konkordiaplatz, climb to the Lötschenlücke and ski down to the village of Blatten.

Round here (with lifts), there's Zermatt and Saas Fee and I imagine Verbier will be open late (if you like that sort of thing) along with Engelberg. They'll be some more but I only keep track of things local enough to get to.
March snow?

or go somewhere a bit nicer and cheaper maybe? they capitalize on this silliness that only half a dozen stations get snow, March isn't late and there's plenty more stations operating.

We'll see. I might give it a try. . .

he sounds a bit "odd", GS9 and 9x are just recreational skis, they're sold retail, you don't need a special permit to use them. It's just the sidecut and design are more race orientated than, say a Metron etc.

I doubt they do, the race department stuff doesn't really appear in retail outlets. What does appear is FIS homogulated skis that are used by competitors in slightly lower level competitions, I've some FIS "Masters" skis I use from time to time. Super fun but brutal, the sweet spot is tiny but if you can ski them they're pure adrenaline.
