I find that surprising, I was there last week and it was busy with a single room, b+b costing 50 euro a night, selected at random by the tourist office for me. It's easy to get there, easyjet to Innsbruck, train to Landeck-Zams and the postbus up the hill.

if only :D only the odd drag lift seems to keep away the riff-raff

Obergurgl's no more expensive than anywhere else in Austria of course, I can't speak for what some UK tour operator charges obviously.

conditions were slightly "sub-optimal", one of the guys described it as skiing in a milk bottle at times :D climbing Piz Buin was good though.
