Gatwick to Geneva, seats available this afternoon... from £65! 8)

This latest post just increases the levels of anguish - levels of taunting that are most unbecoming of you Adders. Please stop immediately :hunf:.

Seriously, its very hard not to be very jealous when you post pictures like that even if I have no clue how to cope with that amount of fresh snow

Chambery airport. Your experiences?

If the larger Tour Operators were to use any imagination (or gave a damn), they could split their charter flights over Saturday and Sunday which would ease congestion in Chambery on a Saturday considerably  .

They should have enough clout in the resorts to get enough hotels, chalets, etc, to opt for either a Saturday or Sunday changeover rather than the current rigid Saturday only changeover. Obviously, such an option would have to be applied for the full season - otherwise you would end up with lots of 6 or 8 day trips, though maybe that would not be a bad thing.

Generally, the Italian hotels operate on a Sunday changeover and the TOs cope with this with mainly Sunday charters to Italy  .

Selva Gardena - ski hire
Started by User in Italy, 5 Replies
Heading off to Selva in February and have been looking at skihire prices. The ones I have seen quoted online seem very high - similar to the highly inflated St Anton prices:x .

Is that normal? Anyone got tips for better value hire? Is it better to wait until we get there or is online as good as it gets?

Chambery airport. Your experiences?

Quite a long time since I have gone through Chambery - I have had quite good experiences but also bad ones. It is a small regional airport that receives the vast bulk of its annual throughput over about a dozen Saturdays in the winter season - nearly all charters. Even when running without delays, it can struggle with the Saturday hordes. However, if there is any delays then it really downhill fast - but not in a good skiing way .

Because of its location - pretty high up and located beside a lake, it does suffer more weather issues that most airports with fog often causing problems. On top of this, air traffic control gives very low priority to charter flights so if you miss your slot for any reason, it can be a very long wait for another one .

To add to this delightful mixture, you also have the inflexibility of French labour laws which will often see restaurants and shops closing at their set times even if the airport is jammed .

It is a bit closer to the mountains than Lyon or Geneva but I reckon the extra half hour or so driving time is well worth it for greater certainty  .

The Skiwelt (Soll and connected villages) is a very extensive ski area with lots of blues and reds. It is very easily reached from Munich.

That sounds like a really smart idea. Do you have a link to the particular type of backpack?

Do a search on the France forum. TonyH, one of our regulars, has posted very detailed trip reports covering Serre.
