If you want to see picture postcard, visit Switzerland to get some perspective )

I believe the Soviets used to have postcards of tractor factories though.

There's no shortage of more charm in Austria or France for that matter, Vaujany for example as mentioned above.

you're referring to this ?

that's hysterically funny, I particularly like :
Finding yourself in a picture-postcard resort is a real bonus and Les Gets in France's famous Portes du Soleil is as charming a ski village as you're likely to find

classic ) 20 years ago this was a small village not without some charm, rather less so now and hardly as charming as you're likely to find unless your satnav is only programmed for Les Gets, Bracknell and Milton Keynes although to be fair Bracknell does have some alpine charm in comparison.

It's quite well known as well I'd say, not just in the UK, here in Switzerland it's often used as a reference in arguments against over development in mountain villages.

None of which is to say it's not an excellent place for a first ski holiday just that claims of village charm are all relative.

Currently

The Climb - Anatoli Bourkeev and G.Weston DeWalt

I have that on talking book. Along with "Epic: Stories of Survival from the World's Highest Peaks" I also have Dark Summit another version of the same events in The Climb and I just loaded "India with Sanjeev Bhaskar ". Paper books I'm reading "The Adventure Alternative" by Colin Mortlock, "Wilderness Medicine" and for light relief "Timebomb" by Gerald Seymour.

If I purchased a goretex product and it degraded after 20 days or so, the retailer would be receiving a parcel from me, since the typical warranty is a year.

They do get a lot of returns but bear in mind 20 days use is around a year for most people. Mostly people are secretly perfectly happy with this, they want a new jacket every year or anyway.

Nice gear old chap.

Haglöfs trousers as well, Omni2's I think with some base and md layer Haglöfs gear hidden underneath. A cold day as I recall and -10 or -20 at that height IIRC.

Hestra state they are waterproof as well, so maybe you were unlucky with a faulty pair??

Waterproof is a relative term for clothes. Unless you have an impermeable membrane then everything has a saturation point and will let water in sooner or later. Mostly the idea Goretex is waterproof is a sham, the true life is often only around 20 days before performance is degraded.

Tony_H wrote:The thing is theres this one Arc'Teryx jacket I really really like the look of, the Beta AR, but I cant bring myself to pay the asking price for it.

I had also seen a really nice Haglofs insulated jacket, and actually spoke to a guy at the Chill Factor e who was wearing the very same one, he said its the best jacket hes ever had! Looks really nice:

that's a Spitz, not insulated though, I don't know Haglöf do any lined jackets excepting down obviously, it's mostly alpine gear and we'd not really bother:

If I buy that black Arc'Teryx jacket, the red sallos will be promoted straight back into the first team. But its unlikely now. I am having a second honeymoon with my Cross jacket.

I wouldn't personally buy an Arc'Teryx jacket, they have a bad reputation or a good reputation according to some. The good reputation is for great customer service when the garment falls apart and they replace it which I take to be bad. Mammut, Marmot, Haglöf, Patagonia, Rab amongst others have a good reputation for lasting long enough that you're fed up of them.

this seasons colour is white obviously )
