There's a bit of a swing in opinion about these now, not only have you those problems with freezing and the problems keeping them clean but there's also a problem that you can't monitor your fluid intake properly and then either empty it too quick or not take enough liquid. All things being equal if you're really working hard and need to keep your fluid intake up you're generally better off stopping for a moment and taking a drink. They're also a nuisance in a full rucksack.

I am pretty sure you would get sick of people asking you where the powder was, thankfully in Scotland you don't really get chairlifts or people willing to be sociable enough with a stranger to make that comment.

you must be a young person.... what's steezy (dude) ?

Generally if you use a piece of new equipment that makes something far easier you would be regarded as 'soft core' or some similar term yet when it comes to fat skis the opposite seems to be the case. I just don't get it. )

unless it's just what it seems and it's not very hard core at all ? )

I did a season skiing all terrain on slalom skis, I may go back to it, purely for the amusement of turning up next to would-be hard core clown at the top, or better still bottom, of a steep and deep with skinny skis to their fat ones, utterly hilarious :D

most boys skiing 100m from the piste on their 100mm skis fail to realise that on the other side of the valley after a 4 hour skin up there's a guy in his seventies on a pair of 70mm skis on something much steeper and deeper.

on a similar vein, just how many pair of endorphins, BD factors, axons, freerides, dukes etc are sold for which the owner doesn't have nor will ever get/use skins? I'll bet it's a sizeable percentage :D

RossF wrote:150mm? Check out "Duret Monster Fats" which are wider than this, 170 I believe.

I knew when I posted that there'd be some "bozo the clown's feet" ski that were wider than they were long and someone, probably in Verbier, would be trying to make anyone without at least 100mm feel inadequate. At some point this has got to be a ***** substitute :D
number one bit of kit

following a chat I was having with someone, we were talking about the top few bits of kit we had without which we couldn't function, those items we're tempted to go buy a roomful of to guarantee a lifetime supply. For me, my Haglöfs barrier jacket is probably the number one, a synthetic mid layer that packs to nothing and provides instant heat for chilly lunch stops, days where there's no sun, chilly huts etc.

Ian Wickham wrote:Thanks for that guy's, I don't really intend to buy this year, just a little proactive planning. I have always quite fancied some fat skis, but I suppose the battle has always been cost against use.

At the moment I own a pair of Fischer 110-89-98, which I will make do with for the lessons.

Can't be bothered to add any photo's

they'll be fine, if you can't use 89mm skis I'd give up ) too early to plan, punters will be on 150mm by next year
