You must be losing the second square bracket or something.
Try just finding a post and clicking on the quote box in that post (before you click reply) and you should find that the message box appears.Then try clicking on preview to make sure you've got it okay.
I tell you what though, all this messing about with this stuff has shown me how to put a line under a post I'm writing, to separate the text should I so want, like this
