Thank you all for the really helpful replies. The ski wear package I have seen is on the Ski & Trek website, Trespass or Dare2b are the manufacturers. Some of the packages are currently half price and range between £99 to about £50. They include as a minimum jacket and ski pants but some also include gloves and a base layer. It seems like good value but I am not familiar with the manufacturer and want to make sure that we are warm enough (praying there will be lots of snow). I will head to TK tomorrow.

Depending on where you are going, January is generally fairly cold. I would count on needing at least: thermals (top and bottom); a mid layer and jacket/sallos. Gloves/Hat are essential and a Buff-type-thing might come in handy too. Remember and price up the 'packages' on a different website to see if you are actually getting good value for money.

Answering your original question, no. A package is probably not the best option. The UK is currently the cheapest country in Europe for ski wear, you just need to know where to look.

As others have said, TK.MAXX is without a doubt your best bet for trousers, tube socks and jackets. I'd use Primark for thermals, and I just picked up a pair of Airwalk gloves rrp-£40 from sports world (formerly 'Sport and Soccer') for £9.99 this afternoon! Sports world are also very good for hats and ruck-sacks...

Do not buy tube socks, they will just lead to discomfort. Socks should be foot-shaped.

Everyone goes on about this, but I have worn tube socks since I re-started ski-ing 7 years ago, without any sort of discomfort. However, Father Christmas has very kindly brought me some very expensive heeled merino wool ski socks and I am going to see if I can notice the difference when I'm ski-ing.

That is because in most rental boots there is enough space for 5 pairs of tube socks

Hmmmm .... I haven't actually tried wearing more than one pair of tube socks in my rental boots.

Oh well, it will be something to try out on our next ski holiday. My daughter will still be wearing tube socks (because Father Christmas didn't buy her any new ones) and I will tell her that my friend Pablo, who is a qualified ski instructor, assures me that there will be enough room in her hired boots for 5 pairs of tube socks

I will let you know what happens ...
