Snappy, I am with you. The last place I worked I was open about how much I earnt (I was not the biggest earner by the way). I was then called in by HR onlt to be told that salary is personal and we should not share it. ££ reflect people's skills set and people will think they are less skilled.
I have a girl who works for me. She is 'level 5'. In my team there are about 6 'level 5'. She knows what everyone earns. She earns the lowest in that band. She thinks she is hard done by - truth of the matter, she is not as skilled.
Where I am going with this, is if you share what you earn people base that on how clever/skilled you are - thats why some people dont like sharing it. Is it a fair reflection. Is a CEO more 'skilled' than me? Probably. Am I more 'skilled' than a plumber? Probably Not - I guess I would earn much more than a plumber.
It is a very sensitive topic -money always will be
I seem to have waffled there a bit. Hope you get what I mean?

Most high earners, IMHO, have been lucky or it has been gifted to them.
I graft my bloody ass off every day and i will break more of a sweat than the likes of most of the super rich. It doesn't make them clever or skilled, some are, but many are just lucky or privileged.
Wages are rarely based on hard work.

I am going to tread carefully here, if I upset anyone it is honestly not intended.
I know what Snapzz does (virgin engineer?), you sweat much more than I do every day. However, I would argue that I work just as 'hard' but a different type.
The boys in Afganistan 'work' even harder. Harder than Snapzzz and me I reckon. They get paid less than me & snapzzz (I am assuming mate without knowing what you earn but knowing what they do).
I think it comes down to a couple of things, 1 being "supply & demand". There are a hell of a lot of people that will join the army, they can afford to pay poor salary. My mate has left the army, now works for Ericsson was a radio engineer. Gets paid a fortune - the skills he learnt in the army (and mindset) are in VERY limited supply in civvi street.
Odd.
Imagine this conversation in a chalet

If anyone asks me how much I earn I can very truthfully say that I don't know. We have lots of tax deductible expenses and allowances and things and I never know which figure to use from which bottom line.
And, of course, the accountants have to work it all out, and our farm tax year ends long before the 5th April, but the cottages have to stick to the 5th April - so between skipping and hopping I have absolutely no idea!
But, hopefully, we will continue to earn enough to pay for at least one ski holiday per year, which is what really matters :D

That is another point, do self employed peeps such as Ally, Wickers, Tony & others kno exactly how much they 'earn'?

I don't
Same as Ally and others, different tax year ends, income from a couple of different places, all the deductables etc etc.
Never know what the tax burden will be until accountants sort out one lot of tax and then a few months later have to sort out the other lot.
Seems to work
I haven't had one of those jobs with a real salary, holiday and sick pay and a company pension since 1984.
Thank goodness
But self-employmentdome and small company ownership is a very different mindset to a classically employed position.
No idea which is best, easiest, etc etc etc
Just different I suppose.
