I like the discreet sock-loss probability conversation, it's a bit like the buttered toast equation.

I agree Tino, but with the toast you've got quantifiable variables - like the way you butter it, the height of the surface you knock it off (or drop it), the surface area and weight of the toast etc.
But I have yet to discover why Tony thinks I will lose more left socks than right ones
How many pairs of identical socks do you think one would need, to keep the numbers of left and right socks about even?

Thanks very much, Dave Mac. Do you think Pablo has that many?
The only problem is that one wouldn't normally take more than 7 pairs of socks (because most people don't ski for more than 7 days at a time). So that's probably not enough pairs to 'even out' the left and right sock loss, unless you go on plenty of ski holidays and keep lots of spare pairs in the drawer at home to renew the pairs.
I do know where odd socks go to, though, because I'm always finding them when I'm cleaning up after my holidaymakers. I find them under the sofa cushions, stuck at the top of the washing machine, at the back of the airing cupboard, under the bed, under the sofa, and at the back of the wardrobe. And I would guess the holidaymakers also lose them in the car and on the beach etc.
