Hi this might sound like a numpty question but I hope you can help. My nephew and I have purchased helmets for this season. We'd like to take these through as hand baggage attached to the outside of our small travel bags. Is this possible. The helmets won't fit easily into either our hold baggage or our hand baggage. What do other people do? Many thanks. :D

Hiya. We put ours into our hold baggage. To save space, we stuff them with small bits of clothing, such as rolled up socks. We also make sure we pack a layer of clothes above and below the helmets to cushion them against impact from the cases being dropped by baggage handlers. We take 2 cases and put a helmet in each. Our cases are quite deep, so the helmets fit ok.

I second Allie's point, try and put them in your hold luggage. I travelled recently with two helmets and they both went in separate suitcases with no problem. In fact, it made sense to me as anything which could be damaged/broken was put in the helmets first. I did think of the baggage handlers, but as my husband pointed out, helmets are meant to be sturdy enough to protect your head! Seriously, If you need to, think of getting bigger suitcases/whatever you use. You can do without worrying if all your gear will fit in.

I would not trust my helmet to baggage handlers. Cases get thrown around and compressed during transit. Helmets are designed to protect the head from impact, how will you tell if your helmet has been subjected to excessive loading during the journey?
I always took my helmet as hand baggage, it would fit in most rucksacks.

I personally put my helmet in my main suitcase, however on my recent trip to Japan I saw plenty of people with helmets attached on the outside of their carry on bags, so it shouldn't be a problem to do that.

If the helmet was attached to the outside of your hand luggage I doubt it would fit in the baggage gauge & with some airlines they would make you put it in your case at check in.
As for baggage handlers, we were delayed at Toulouse airport & I watched them unloading skis, as the trailer had not arrived to take the luggage they amused themselves by throwing the skis from the plane onto the tarmac.

Brooksy, I had a brand new and unused pair of Movement's damaged by baggage handling between LHR and GVA last year. Tails chipped  . I'd wrapped them in bubble wrap and they were in a decent bag, but the bag was cut too. Of course you have to spot all the damage before leaving the airport, or there is no chance of making a claim for the damage.
Have had to fix them with Araldite.

Many (if not most) helmets are significantly smaller than carry on baggage gauges. Prudent packing!
