Hey guys,

I'm looking to rent some skis online for a trip to La Plagne on the 2nd Jan.

Online ski rental places always offer 'theft and damage' cover as an option. Does anyone know whether this usually covers you if you leave the skis outside a cafe during the day and they get nicked? I've looked at the wording, and there's no mention of needing to take 'reasonable care', so I think it probably does. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I figure the main reason most people want this cover (over and above normal travel insurance which usually has a 'reasonable care' exemption) is so they don't have to worry about leaving skis unattended, but I just wanted to check!

Thanks very much for any help, and happy skiing!

Robin

Hi Robin,
Yes the insurance definitely covers you if you leave the skis unattended.
However all ski hire shops ask clients who got skis stolen to register a complain at the police, and it's a long procedure - this is why we always advise to keep an eye on one's skis !
Happy Xmas

RobinL I do try to split them up though, or mix and match with someone else in the party when leaving them outside somewhere. They could get nicked or just accidentally taken (it could happen I watched one girl persevere for 10 minutes one day before she realised she was trying to get someone else's skis on). Either way ending up without a pair of skis is an inconvenience you could do without even if you are insured.
I wish I could meet the person who first decided to strap 2 planks to their feet and throw themselves down a mountain

Thanks for the quick replies! I'll go for the insurance for peace of mind, but splitting the skis up sounds like a good trick!

Well, i would be very surprised if any insurers would cover you if you left them unattended.
Thats such an easy get out for them.

Schnapps, how could you not leave them unnattended? Everyone has to eat, drink, pee.

Anyway, Arnaud has given you the definitive answer from Skiset, J2ski's ski rental of choice. And a very good outfit they are too.

Well, i understand that we all will have to leave them unattended at some point so i suppose i should have said that i would be surprised if they were covered if left 'unsecured'.
I also understand that there are precious little secure places on the mountain but having experienced the dark side of insurers in other fields i do wonder why they would be different with Ski gear.

Fair enough Scnapps, but what about Arnaud's assurance?
Have to say, I never insure ski gear, if someone nicks my skis, good luck to them, I'd like to see them ski on them!
Since in 43 years of skiing, I have never had theft insurance, and not had gear stolen, I guess I am a wee bit ahead of the game.
And if it happens? Well, I'll just spend another £50 on skis. )
