Having been doing a bit of dry slope skiing over the last few weeks, in preperation for the Xmas family ski holiday in Dorfgastein (Austria), speaking to fellow skiers it dawned on me how many had been priced out of going away in the school holidays due to the huge price spike for the Xmas and Half term weeks.
My answer is always jump in car anddrive ,you can pre-book accomodation through the local tourist info offices. An example of the cost for this year Xmas holiday is £340 ferry/fuel for the return trip for 6 people. Nine nights accomodation in an appartment that sleeps 8 , with 3 double rooms & a double sofabed in the lounge £900. We have done the full Dunkerque to the Gastein valley run in 1 day before (730 miles ouch) but will break it up this year on the way down with a stop over at a Xmas market in Germany.Obviously taking your own vehicle means no faffing at airports hoping the skis got put on your flight and not the one later (it's happened to me before / Geneva).Having your own skis & boots and not renting them out is obviously a big saving and much easier when you can pop them in the boot , instead of over sized baggage check in at £20ish each way.
