Not sure wether to join friends in France over New Year as it is more expensive than we would normally pay and some say pistes are very crowded and lift lines are v.long (worse than Feb half term) - any first hand info gratefully received.

Depends where you go. I've lived in Paradiski, French Alps, for 8 years and I avoid skiing in Feb, but New Year is usually fine.

Snowboarded in La Plagne over New Year (my first time on the piste) and New Years Eve itself was the dullest I have ever had.
