Hi,i am going to sauze d'oulx in jan 2010,with fammily and friends (5 of us all together). We are staying half-board at Relais des Alpes.has anybody stayed here before,if so,what was your stay like? We have read all the reviews(good+bad),still not sure what to think?? we got a good deal,so we just booked it anyway, just looking for your encounters with this hotel!
My fiancee has been to sauze twice before, but not in the past 3 years,as we went to Bardonecchia(jan 2009) last year and the year before was france Valmeinier(jan 2008) and Andorra( jan 2007)
What are the costs for food+drink in the resort,as what with the state of the euro,we are thinking it will cost a lott,so any ideas of reasonable places to eat and drink, would be most welcome?
Thanks,Steve.

Relais des Alpes is a good hotel, by italian standards anyway. It has a bar underneath called the Queens Lounge which gets busy in the evenings and there is often live music. Its on a little square about 300m walk from the Clotes lift (dont bother with the Sportinia lift, its a long walk or an anooyingly packed and infrequent bus ride away). It will take you 5 mins max to walk to Clotes and you will end up away from the ski schools too which is a bonus.
Food and drink on the slopes, expect to pay around 4 euros for a beer, 2 to 3 for a coffee, and anything from 2 to 4 euros for a slice of pizza. Paninis are similarly priced depending on where you eat. Best bet IMO would be to take drinks in a rucksack with you up the mountain to keep costs down as the exchange rate has had a serious effect on things.
Ghost bar on the road down from Clotes and Paddy McGintys are popular apres ski bars, Ghost does have a happy hour around 5pm, Paddys is something like 6 til 9 from memory. I think you are HB in the Relais des Alpes - it is the hotel Crystal used when the celebs came into town for the ski challenge and I didnt hear Steve Redgrave complaining, but then I would imagine there are a couple of different standards of room depending on tour op, so best of luck.
Sause is a cute little village, and its worth a walk down into the old village from the square, down past the Hotel Faure towards the church, some lovely little places to eat and drink and a nice walk of an evening.
paddy McGintys can get "lively" but its all good natured and the English lady (H) who runs the place always has something going on, such as a pub quiz for example later in the evenings. They also have ski tv so you can keep up with football/cricket whilst away.
Its a good fun place, and what I particularly like about Sauze is the fact the slopes are never busy. Theres a lot of nice tree skiing over there too, and you need to be prepared to venture off the main runs to benefit.
Best place for an afternoon drink sitting in the sun is Clotes Bar at the top about 200m above the Clotes lift, accessible by heading down off the Motorway (as they call it) as if heading back into resort. Plenty of deckchairs to chill out on and watch the afternoon mist rise from the valley before sunset.
Enjoy.

My last trip to Sauze was Feb 2008, I love the place. This season the new link is supposed to be open over to Sestriere, where we spent about half of the week as there is great skiing over there, and it makes a nice change of scene.italy wrote:Hi,i am going to sauze d'oulx in jan 2010,with fammily and friends (5 of us all together). We are staying half-board at Relais des Alpes.has anybody stayed here before,if so,what was your stay like? Hi,thank's for your reply.Plenty of info, which will help with our stay.Like i said my fiancee has been a few times before, but not in the last 3 years. She does remember all the places you have mentioned and agrees with what you have said.
we hope our stay will be as good as the famous Mr Redgrave! lol.
The idea of taking a back pack sounds good and should save us some funds!
thank's again for your help.
