I'm off this summer to spend a week in Livigno, In the past I have driven over the stelvio pass but this year I was thinking about taking the family for a mornings skiing. I have never been summer skiing before and I am aware of the slushy lunchtime pistes, but has anybody out there in J2ski land have any experience in skiing the stelvio glacier or information on the experience of summer skiing.

Ian, I have never been in Summer, but I have been told that there is sometimes summer ski-ing on the Federia pistes in Livigno itself. You will know the piste, off the back of the Carosello 3000.

I have been several times in summer and I have never heard of any skiing on Federia, but then again I have never asked the question, so it's a possibility, thanks

Well, since you ask so nicely....

Tignes, summer, orribly cold, very windy and bleak, funicular access, too windy for top cable car, scrounged some skis

Zermatt summer and late autumn, hot sun, cold air. Very high sunscreen needed. Plenty of ski rentals, altitude can be very tiring at first. Limited slopes open, not suitable for beginners, access by draglifts after a gondola, and 2 cable cars. Early starts, finish by 3pm. Share the slopes with race teams despite their renting of private lanes from the resort

Snow quality generally excellent, due to cold air
