Superstorm On Track To Deliver 3m+ Snowfall Total To Andes Through Weekend

J2SkiNews posted 18-Jul

As J2Ski.com forecast, a major winter storm is pounding the central Andes, producing exceptional snowfall for the ski slopes of Chile and Argentina and prompting authorities to close key access routes to Chile's ski resorts ahead of worsening conditions. Early totals indicate the system could be one of the region's largest in years, with projections suggesting up to 3 m (10 ft) of accumulation in some areas by Monday.

Portillo reported 105 cm (42") of snowfall in the first 24 hours and expects at least another metre before the end of Saturday, followed by lighter pulses. Valle Nevado logged 66 cm (27") by Friday evening. In advance of the storm, Chile's Ministry of Public Works pre‑emptively closed the only roads to Valle Nevado, and officials say reopening will depend on avalanche stability and the pace of clearing operations. Powderchasers posted the picture above of Argentina's Las Lenas.

The storm arrives after a dry and often mild start to the 2026 season, which left many resorts with limited terrain open. Now, extreme snowfall and whiteout conditions have effectively cut off high‑altitude areas. Valle Nevado has advised guests not to attempt the ascent, while Portillo has closed with no confirmed reopening date.

Meteorologists attribute the event to a long‑duration atmospheric river delivering enhanced Pacific moisture, consistent with patterns expected during a developing strong El Niño.
