Bread is your enemy.

The regular eating thing is very important. I have found that when i am trying to loose weight, I loose at least 15-30% more when I have a bag of apples on my desk to snack on when i'm a bit hungry.
Will the lift ever be open?

I'm in danger of sounding like a broken record, but give boxing training a try. It is perfect for dry land training. Many of the same principles apply. It is very good for developing balance whilst improving core and leg strength.

No-one will mention your moobs either :-)
The incident itself is tragic.

The fact that this guy was even charged is quite wrong though. A situation like that involves joint responsibility. There are many safety factors to consider, islands of safety, line of sight, tranciever operation, slope safety, skier seperation etc... Whilst it seems that they made some major errors of judgement, it is far too easy to judge in hindsight. Nobody gets all safety aspects perfect 100% of the time. Especialy when you are new to off piste skiing.

To say that he killed her is just wrong, making an awful tragedy more difficult for him to come to terms with, and doing nobody any good. Nobody's motivation for improving their off piste skiing safety is because they fear being prosecuted by the authorities if their partner is killed. Who would want to ski with somebody who thought like that? It is because they wish to minimise the chances of anything bad happening to either of them, surely?

It is an inhuman response to a personal tragedy in my view.

Just checked out the sunshine village webcams - there is still a 30-40 cm base at the snow study plot!

With all this rain about the pavements are very slippery ..... time for a helmet

The government should act to ensure that all those venturing onto the pavements are properly prepared.

tarbs wrote:blue is for total beginners and this is where the ski school in resorts take people for the 1st day or so. nothing to worry about, thats for sure

tarbs, I doubt you will find many instructors that will take beginners on a blue run on their first day. Maybe the 2nd or 3rd day if the group is progressing well and building confidence.

Green runs are the easiest.

In general these are the global ratings in order of easiest to most difficult:

Green
Blue
Red (Only in Europe)
Black (aka black diamond in North America)
Double Black Diamond (only North America)

DrTom - Definitely better than plastic and I imagine a lot safer too. Indoor slopes are good to get the basics so long as you have a good instructor.

When you go for your first lesson in the resort, be sure to explain that you have mastered the basics (can make a few wedge turns or whatever - on a beginner slope) and that this was in an indoor slope. Stress that you have never used a chairlift before. If it is a group lesson, you ideally want to avoid being put in the never ever group, but you don't want the instructor to assume that you are happy with using a chairlift. I have heard of too many beginners who have had relatively minor incidents with chairlifts that have needlessly and seriously dented their confidence, which can really effect your first few days on the slopes.

BTW - Weardale - Just looked it up - I had never heard of it before. You learn something everyday. It does look a bit rough and ready but also a lot of fun.

All the best.
