Why I love La Plagne

Thanks Daved :)

That's OK, I don't care about the concrete. I live in a really beautiful place for the rest of the year - all I care about is the ski-ing and the price! Once I'm out of the apartment and up the mountain on my skis I won't be able to see any concrete :)

OK, if I was to go ski-ing in La Plagne next season (which I might do), where would be the best place to stay if I want to get there using the train and public bus and I want to go self-catering?
Naturally I prefer ski-in/out but I also want to stay somewhere cheap.
And I don't mind staying in a place with concrete architecture!

Hi AllyG
When going to Madonna d. Campiglio I've booked flights to Milano Bergamo or Verona, both airports are about 2.5 hours from the resort, I suppose a little longer for Folgarida. If there's many of you going you could maybe consider a getting a transfer by a private coach - the resort's tourist office/accommodation provider will be able to recommend you a local company.

Thanks very much for your advice :)
None of us have ever been there before!
The problem is that, like last time when we went to Tignes, we're all coming from different parts of the globe and getting there in different ways.
We will have at least 2 cars driving there, I want to go there on the train (on the sleeper from Paris direct to Verona, and then from Verona to Trento and Male on the train), and CatP will be flying from the U.S.

There is a very good shuttle bus from the nearest airports (Milan Bergamo and Verona Catullo,) to Folgarida, http://flyskishuttle.com/ for only 32 euros return, but it only makes one journey on Sundays which might not suit our flight times. And the bus time-table for next season isn't up yet.

So, I am thinking about hiring a mini-bus, but I won't know if we need one until we've all sorted out how we're getting there and back, and we won't know that until the RyanAir and EasyJet flights come up for sale. But it would be much cheaper to hire one from Verona Catullo rather than from Venice Marco Polo. And I think a taxi could probably do it in just over 2 hours from Verona airport, whereas the bus takes about 3 and a half hours (because it stops in lots of other places as well).

The most promising flight at the moment is BA Gatwick to Verona at £107 return (including luggage), for 2nd and 9th February.

Edit
The shuttle bus doesn't run between Folgarida and Venice Marco Polo, only between Folgarida and Verona Catullo and Milan Bergamo airports.
Getting to Celva (Val Gardena)???

If you don't want to go to Innsbruck, then I suppose which one of the other airports you go to will depend on the timing of the flights and what the transfers are like.

We haven't bought any flights yet ourselves, because, as I said, EasyJet and RyanAir aren't on sale yet.

I have found these people who do transfers, and they reckon it would take 3 hours and 50 minutes from Milan Bergamo to Selva. I think it's a bus:

I have been looking at flights to the Dolomites for the J2Ski group holiday to Folgarida in 2014.

The airports we're considering are Venice Marco Polo, Verona (VRN), Milan Bergamo and Innsbruck. The closest airport is Bolzano but it doesn't seem to have any direct flights from the U.K.

Here are some of the flights I have found:

Monarch fly from Manchester to Innsbruck and from Manchester to Verona and from Manchester to Venice.
RyanAir fly from East Midlands to Bergamo and Birmingham to Bergamo (but the RyanAir tickets aren't on sale yet).
Inghams fly to Innsbruck from Birmingham and Manchester.
EasyJet fly from Manchester to Venice (but their tickets aren't on sale yet either).

According to J2Ski, your nearest airport after Bolzano, is Innsbruck:

It looks like you had some fresh snow! Lovely tree-lined ski-ing. And it doesn't look too crowded either ...
