Tony,
I hope your son is better soon. Let us know how he gets on.

Thanks Tony.
I had a look on a currency converter site, and it says $9000 is £5,500 so it looks as though your son isn't having a bad deal at all, because his schooling is costing you less than if he stayed in this country for it. And I would think he'll have a great time over there on a football scholarship.

But, it must be awkward for you to finance him, because as you said he can't borrow from the U.K. student loan finance scheme. I can see now why you reckon you can't afford Obergurgl next year.

Our elder daughter is at Uni in the U.K, which is how I know it costs £9000 per year. But she is borrowing under the scheme, and I don't think she has to pay it back until she starts earning over £15,000 p.a. and even then it's only a reasonable amount per week, and there's no interest on the loan - it just increases in line with inflation.

Well, I will be ski-ing down to 1550 to make myself a cup of tea in our apartment. Hopefully milk will not be over £100 per bottle, or I will have to bring dried milk with me, as well as decaffeinated tea bags.

Tony,
If he's on a scholarship, why's it so expensive? Is this a university scholarship? America is a very long way away. Are you going to go and visit him? University in this country now costs £9000 per year, what with £3000 tuition fees and £6000- accommodation etc.

The reason I sent my daughter to the French language school in Nice was because she's just finished her GCSE's and she wanted a holiday in France, but I couldn't go because I'm too busy with all the cleaning etc. and she's too young to go on her own. A friend suggested a French language school as a sort of half way house between going on her own, and going with family.

Included in the price was accommodation with a French family, French lessons all morning on weekdays, and guided excursions including diving, and windsurfing. But I had to pay the airfares on top, which were about £120 return with Easyjet.

It worked out pretty well, so I see it as an investment towards her gaining successful independence from me, rather than money 'wasted' on a holiday.

I thought at least they might have electric seat warmers by now, in the chair lifts.

Anyone booked for next season yet?

Caron,
I forgot to say that it sounds as though your chalet is across the road from the Crystal hotel. We used to use that funny short drag lift to get high enough to ski down to the road, and then walk over the road to the hotel.

I'm sure you'll have a great time. If you're anything like me, it's the waiting now that's hard to bear.

Coop,
I don't know the answer to that one, I'm afraid.

I think there is a large variation between teachers, and it's not just about which ski school they belong to. We've had excellent and awful teachers with the same school during the same holiday. And the problem is that sometimes you can't change groups because there's nowhere to go to.

However, I do know that you can book your own lessons independently of the tour operator, because I did that. We travelled with Inghams and I booked everything else myself - lessons, ski hire, and ski pass, and the rep was quite pleased really, because she didn't have to come round later with everything.

I got really cross when we went to Zell am See, which was the first time I'd skied on snow for 35 years, because we booked everything with Airtours and we had to walk past a perfectly good ski hire shop to one 'miles away' which Airtours used. So ever after that I've booked our own ski hire and found the nearest one to our accommodation. But I shouldn't think you'll have that particular problem in Niederau because it's so small.

Thanks Admin,
If I see my daughter going off piste again in her lesson in Feb, I might just need one of those machines myself.

Anything new for 1550 where we're staying?
