We usually stay in those tiny rabbit hutch apartments, so I'm actually quite glad they have those ultra cheap apartments because otherwise I don't think we'd be able to afford to go ski-ing. And we're usually in bed by 9-30 p.m. and we certainly don't go out drinking at night.

And I'm not sure that it is people from the cheap apartments who are causing all the trouble in ski resorts like Val Thorens. Someone needs to stand in the street in the middle of the night and find out where the guy throwing up everywhere is staying. Anyone want a project for next season?

Strangely enough I usually find that it is the rich professional holidaymakers who cause the most trouble in my holiday cottages. They seem to think that rules don't apply to them, and they often have no idea at all how to clean up after themselves.

For example, we had a family like that last week, and they let their dogs on the sofa downstairs and in the bedroom upstairs and my friend who helps me clean got bitten by a flea from their dogs. The agency rules clearly state no dogs in bedrooms or on sofas and that all dogs must be flea free. And we've had lots of working class people who are ultra careful to obey all the rules and leave the place spotless.

So I don't really know what the answer is to the drunken yob problem in ski resorts or anywhere else.

I don't think you can blame the place, wherever it is, it's some of the people who go there on holiday.

This morning, for example, I went to our local village shop, which is right opposite the beach, to get some milk.

And I carefully parked so that I wasn't in the village bus stop parking place because otherwise there is nowhere for the bus to stop and no-one can get on or off the bus. The car behind me stopped right in the bus stop place. And when the man got out I told him that he wasn't allowed to stop there, because of the bus, and that there was a perfectly good space a few yards in front of him. He said 'What are you the traffic warden?' and I said 'No, I was just trying to be helpful'. And he walked off into the shop. He was a typical arrogant, inconsiderate holidaymaker. They come here because they like the scenery and the peace etc. and some of them then try to ruin it for everyone else.

Thanks very much Ian,
But I don't think I can get there in time for 2 p.m. tomorrow.

If I'm going to be in your part of the country I will let you know, and if you happen to be anywhere near us let me know and we will give you a cup of tea - we don't go in for posh garden entertainment.

Ally
Ian,
I would love to come to one of your posh garden parties, as long as you remember to provide vegeburgers and something like schloer.

Rose,
I think I'd better join a less posh ski web site. I can't keep up with all this garden entertaining.

Ally
Ian,
Do you really throw garden parties? How posh. The only thing I ever do is give our friends a cup of tea if they happen to call in.

Ally
Thanks for clarifying, Tony,
I've been to one of those parties as well, and I thought it was kind of sweet of the Queen to invite a whole load of people she didn't know into her house and garden and give them tea, because she thought they deserved a treat.

I went over 30 years ago, and it was rather exciting then, because that was before they opened Buckingham Palace up to tourists, and it was a rare chance to get into the Palace (we walked through the Palace in order to get into the garden).

It was a bit like a village garden fete.

The size of the sandwiches or what?
