I have a penchant for films where goodies beat baddies, which often do have some violence in them. But I never watch wrestling, or boxing, or those plotless violent films. And very occasionally I like comedy (with a happy ending), as in 'Father of the Bride'. What about you then, which sort of films do you like? Ally |

I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't stand Mamma mia, and I will keep well away from that lookalike you mentioned. As I said, they stole the plot for the film, and borrowed all the music, and then presumably paid a huge amount for some very famous actors and actresses to make idiots of themselves (like embarassingly bad singing), and the final result was simply appalling. That's rather difficult to do - list my top 10 films. Maybe I could just list the ones that I can remember that I liked. I'm a very disorganized person, and I haven't really ever thought about it much. 'Father of the Bride' 1 and 2 '3 men and a baby' and ditto and 'a little lady' All the Bourne films (4?) The Bruce Willis film with the gold and the riddles and the others in the set. 'The day after Tomorrow' 'Riddle of the Sands' (beautiful scenery and I like anything to do with sailing) 'The lord of the Rings' (I've read all the books loads of times) 'Gone with the Wind' (okay I know it has a sad ending and it makes me cry every time, but I still like it, and I've read the book about 10 times). I'm sure there's lots more I've forgotten but that should give you an idea. As I said, I know I'm in the minority as regards my opinion of 'Mamma Mia'. Ally |

Are you sure we're talking about the same film? (Sorry everyone) but the Mamma Mia I went to see was all about trying to find out who the girl's father actually was (plus a lot of very silly singing and dancing) so he could be there at her wedding. The old film I saw had nothing to do with Greeks or stoning. It was about an Italian girl who was an illegitimate 'war baby' and her mother didn't know which of 3 American servicemen was the father, and the mother'd been claiming money off all 3 of them (without telling the other 2, if you see what I mean). And, unfortunately for the mother, the Americans decided to go back for a reunion and of course all the potential fathers thought 'great' they'd be able to finally meet their daughter. And there were some very amusing scenes where she had to get one father out the way to greet the other one, etc. etc. And it all had a very happy ending (although you still didn't get to find out which one was the father, because of course it was way before the days of DNA testing). But I can't remember the name of the film. All I can say is that it is about a million times better than 'Mamma Mia' (in my not so humble opinion). Ally |

I didn't mean to spoil it for you. 'Sophie's choice' is actually a fantastic film, if you can deal with the traumatic aspects of it. I'm the other way around to you, I only see films, or read books, if I already know the ending - to make sure it's a happy ending. I went to see 'Mamma Mia' because it had Meryl Streep in it, and I found it embarassingly bad, although I realize I'm in the minority here. I would never have believed they'd be able to persuade all those super-famous actors and actresses to take part in such a rubbishy film. And they nicked the plot from an old film that I've seen (which I thought was much better). Ian, I will check out that film of yours, to see if it's 'happy' enough for me to watch. I can't deal with anything like lions eating zebras, people's boyfriends running off with someone else, or 'goodies' dying. Ally |

I only like films, books, and serials with happy endings. I like it when the baddy gets caught, and the injured get rescued etc. hence I like NCIS, Casualty, Numbers etc. My flat mate when I was at Uni tricked me into going to see 'Sophie's Choice' and I was traumatized for life. I can still see Meryl Streep on the station platform trying to decide which one of her kids to give up to the Nazis before she goes off to the concentration camp. And that bit at the end when she commits suicide - although I haven't seen the film for 27 years. Ally |
