Brilliant show. I'd love to see a part two where Johnson himself tries out skiing! But the insights into the mentality of the competitors was fascinating and really touching in some cases. If the rest of the BBC coverage of the Winter Olympics is that good we're in for a treat.
Passo Tonale or Bardonecchia

I'd go for Bardonecchia. I don't snowboard much but hasn't it got the boarding stuff from the Turin winter olympics (2006?) so presumably that's all v. high quality. DOn't know about from a beginner's perspective though.

It's a lovely town too.
Zell am See

This lad I know just spent a week in Kaprun, and did some skiing in Zell am See while he was there - he said it was quality.

He also said that the view from the top '200 peaks' is excellent - on a good day you can see most of the Kaprun ski area from up there.

And while it's the opposite side of Kaprun from Zell the Kitzsteinhorn glacier is meant to be something else.
z0mg that's an awesome lineup!

what's snow conditions generally like in mayrhofen in april - still good?

I've skiied with my iPhone 3G for two seasons now and as long as its in an inside pocket I've never felt it was in any danger.

Agreed. My iPhone (in hard case) felt pretty safe.
You should look at jailbreaking and installing 'Glove Pod' as this allows you to change tracks by clicking the volume up and down buttons. Taking your gloves off to use the touchscreen can be a real PITA.

I have a similar option on my shuffle: there's a small volume control device a few inches below the right headphone. You can press it to skip tracks forward or back. That's if you're confident using one hand to change song instead of controlling your descent... But I suppose the value of having a 250 song shuffle is that I only have songs I want to listen to on there!
best austrian resort

With children you probably want to avoid St Anton and Ischgl - very popular with noisy vomiting 18-30s so not the best place for a family trip.

So I'd say Obergurgl or Mayrhofen. Bad Gastein is lovely but probably compromises too far the other way in its evening activities - all theatre and classical music!

Courmayeur

It's quite a nice town, and it still feels relatively authentic which is nice if that's what you're looking for. Some of the skiing is pretty challenging, but the proximity to Chamonix is good if you can afford it.

Personal favourites of mine to ski to are

Kasabian - Reason is treason
Arcade Fire - Laika
Doves - Pounding (funnily enough being used on Ski Sunday right now)
Stone Roses - I am the Resurrection (album version)

Three thumbs up! I'd also nominate:

Arctic Monkeys - Dancing Shoes, Perhaps Vampires is a bit strong but..., Crying Lightning, Still Take You Home,

Charlatans - Over Rising, The Only One I Know

Interpol - PDA, Slow Hands, Roland

And almost anything by Pixies.

I've got an iPod shuffle I always take skiing, with c.200 songs I love skiing to. Also because the new shuffles are so small they're less inconvenient and less likely to break. I wouldn't risk a big iPod touch on the slopes, or at least not until I get better at skiing!
