The snow report for Borovets is here: http://www.j2ski.com/snow_forecast/Bulgaria/Borovets_snow_report.html It says that only 60% of the pistes are open, and the current snow cover is 35 cm on the upper slopes and 10 cm on the lower ones (i.e. there is snow, but not much). The snow forecast is 6 cm on Monday 18th, 1 cm on Tuesday 19th, and 4 cm on Thursday 21st. I hope the forecast is wrong and you get a pile of snow just before you arrive :D Ally |

Isn't that the same as the difference between being solvent and insolvent? Ally |

If the snow is poor in Zell and the neighbouring resorts, I think the crush at Kaprun will be even worse  We only visited Kaprun for one day, and went all the way up (past the midway station) to the top. I have a feeling that gondola is the only way up (I'm sure someone will correct me here). If so, it is likely to get crowded, especially if as I said the snow is poor elsewhere because people bus in from all the surrounding resorts, so I'd advise getting up early. I'm quite sure there will be plenty of snow up on the glacier :D. As I understand it, the problem with the glacier isn't about the reliability of the snow, but that when it's very windy they shut the lifts, and even if they haven't shut all the lifts it's absolutely freezing up there because there's no shelter at the top. We checked the weather forecast before we left Zell and went there on a lovely sunny day with no wind, so conditions were fine. Ally |

That sounds a much better idea than going on the bus. I was actually afraid that my daughter was going to be squashed flat by the rush of people plus skis and sticks etc. I much preferred the ski-ing at Zell am See to Kaprun when we went, but at the time I only had about one week's ski-ing experience. The glacial bowl above Kaprun is very bare and 'white' whereas Zell am See has trees and the view of the lake and easy runs in lots of different directions. The only bad thing I have to say about Zell is that when we were there we had to cross a main road in the morning carrying our skis, with very heavy traffic to get to the main gondola, and on their website I see they have something about a new tunnel for the road, although I don't know exactly which bit of road they've managed to bypass. Have fun! Ally |

Watch you don't get flattened by the rush to get on the ski bus  - we nearly were when we were going back to Zell am See from Kaprun a few years ago. I guess the thing to do would be to avoid rush hour. Ally |

Eggman, Thanks for your reply. A photo would be truly horrifying but very interesting! I can appreciate the fact that you haven't been wearing high heels :D but do you think you could have been wearing shoes with a narrow toe section? An increasing distortion of the big toe, something like you're describing, runs in my family as well, and I've always been very careful to either go barefoot (as a child I used to go around London barefoot and in the fields here as well), or wear trainers or wellies and so far my feet are fine :D My older sister wore high heels etc. and her foot is quite distorted now. I always banned my kids from high heels and narrow shoes and their feet seem to be okay. You are very brave to have an operation like that on your feet. I think I'd be petrified  I hope it fixes the problem for you so that you are fit to ski once more :D. Ally |

Have a good time Pablo, and tell us all about it when you get back (with photos please!) :D Ally |

Apparently, if you buy red or normal diesel in the autumn/winter, it already has an additive to protect it down to minus 15 degrees C, which is normally fine, unless you are driving yourself to your ski-ing holiday, or we have some extreme winter weather.
But you can buy diesel additives in this country to add to your tank, to prevent the waxing blocking up filters etc. down to much lower temperatures. I found 2 products (which I haven't tested, so I don't know how good they are) on the internet. http://www.justgoodcars.com/car-news-worldwide/auto-news-3248.html http://www.bonnymans.co.uk/index.php?l=product_detail&p=4 Ally |
