Thanks very much Bandit, that's exactly what I wanted to know

I go to London every now and then, because my parents live there, and I can easily spend a day in a ski boot shop. I will see if my daughter wants boots as well, because as I keep saying, she is a better skier than me and correctly fitting boots will be bound to help her.

Tony, I was joking about you running my life. I'm sorry if you thought I was being rude or whatever. I am well used to other people running my life - particularly my husband and my daughter

Pablo,
Great minds think alike, I've already added the bit about the pistes to the second instalment on page one.

I'm sorry it's taking me so long, but I have had a few other things to do - like going to hospital and having my foot operated on, and now I have to go out for a French lesson. I will write another installment on prices later. I also have to clean the farmhouse ready for more holidaymakers but I'm paying someone else to do it because I was told to rest my foot, and I don't think cleaning counts as resting :D

If someone will suggest a boot place that is pretty nearly 100% guaranteed to be able to fit me boots that really do 'fit' I will definitely consider going there and buying boots. And I don't really care how far away it is - if the boots are good it will be worth it.

Tony,
I asked you for some help, and all you did was roll your eyes at me

Everyone else, thank you very much for your advice. I was entirely serious. It seems to me that buying boots that fit well is very difficult. A friend of mine bought boots at our nearest ski boot fitting shop (the ski slope at Pembrey 50 miles away) and found them total agony when she tried using them on her ski-ing holiday, ditched them and hired boots instead.

I am wondering now if we go to Tignes again in October on the glacier with the Edge to Edge camp, whether they'd fit me some and let me try them out at Tignes.

Boots I could fit in a suitcase would be a very good idea. Everyone else was totally right about my helmet, I found it really comfy and no problem at all and it went in my suitcase. In fact, the only problem I had with it was that I couldn't talk on the phone because I couldn't fit my mobile under my ear flaps. I must have looked a bit stupid as well, in that Olympic slalom course at Courchevel, because half way down, when we entered the second course, my goggles fell off my helmet and were dangling by the strap at the back. Hopefully that bit wasn't videod!

I am writing my commentary on the pistes at Courchevel but I will paste it in to one of the earlier reports.

Hi Tony,
Well, seeing as you have now taken charge of my life (at least in the boot buying department) where would you like me to go to buy my boots?

Hi Gadgetgirl,
£40 for a pair of boots is amazingly cheap! Well done for getting such a comfy pair
We hired ours from Intersport in 1550 and paid about £100 for the 'noir' boots and skis for 7 days.

I think my main problem would be carting them about. We are already fully loaded with luggage as it is and we have to do a lot of travelling on trains and the underground. It wouldn't be so bad if we went back to the same resort every year because I suppose I could pay one of the hire shops to store my boots for me, but my daughter likes going to different resorts - although she liked Courchevel so much that she wants to go back there next year.

I have also been put off buying any boots by the numerous posts from people who have bought boots only to find they're exremely uncomfortable once they try ski-ing in them. And I only ski for about a week, or maybe 2 weeks, at the most each year.

Bandit,
That's the whole problem. It's not like buying ready made boots. I don't suppose anyone would want to make me a boot that fits me, let me try it out (on a snow dome if in the U.K.), and then have me say that (perhaps) it doesn't make any difference.

Thanks Pablo for clarifying that.

It would be nice if I could try out a well fitting boot without actually having to buy it
