Speeding in Switzerland

Ian Wickham wrote:taking into consideration that car speedos are approx. 10% inaccurate you should never get caught....

How old is your car? 8) speedos are legally permitted to over-read by up to 10% (but not to under-read, at all) - modern cars are / should be pretty accurate.

The speedos in cars I've driven / ridden in recently were within 1 or 2mph of the GPS (on flat, straight roads) at any speed.

Go carefully - especially with French Autoroute limits being lowered in some areas lately...
SkiSet Ski Hire Choices

Karen - did you take this up with SkiSet at the time? You should have received at least what you paid for, and all your details should most certainly have been available at the shop (that being the whole point of taking them, of course).

karen72 wrote:if you are going to niderau and booking through skiset, pay the least amount you can, you still will end up with the same thing.

No, DO NOT do that. If you have any concerns about the service you receive when you collect your skis (here or anywhere else) then you should contact SkiSet immediately - so that they are able to put things right while you're on holiday.

SkiSet work with over 600 shops in 350+ resorts, so the occasional issue will arise. In four seasons of working with them we know them to be committed to the quality of the network, and to respond quickly.

Karen, please PM me with details of your booking, so I can forward that to SkiSet.
UBMi UAE have confirmed that they are working with Majid Al Futtaim Leisure, operators of Ski Dubai, to bring the first snow event to Abu Dhabi this autumn. The Adrenaline Sports Live festival, will run from October 8th to 10th October.

Adrenaline Sports Live is the country's first and so far only annual meeting point for the extreme, adventure and adrenaline sports communities and related companies. Adrenaline Sports Live 2009 aims to be what the organisers describe as an innovative action-packed family day out, where visitors can try out new sports, see professionals demonstrate their skills, get advice from local sports clubs, buy sports equipment and clothing and book adventure holidays directly at the festival.

Majid Al Futtaim Leisure plans to build a temporary ski slope at the Adrenaline Sports Live festival where visitors to the festival can try skiing and snow oarding for themselves.
Mike Mahoney, General Manager of Ski Dubai, the region's first indoor ski resort, is delighted with the idea of taking the slopes of Ski Dubai outside the facility.

"This is the first time that we are taking our slopes to our Abu Dhabi visitors rather than they visiting us and we are very excited about it. The experience of snow in a desert is unique and we recognise that a lot of people in the UAE have never experienced snow. By taking our slopes beyond Dubai, we want the residents of the capital to have an unforgettable experience of snow and winter."

Matt Tarrant, Show Director of Adrenaline Sports Live presented by Rani says "As the region's first and only established festival for adrenaline, extreme and adventure sports and holidays, it is very important to us to continue to provide innovative, fresh and exciting experiences for visitors to the festival - the success of the festival depends entirely on the visitor experience. At this point, Abu Dhabi does not have an established indoor ski slope, so we are proud to work with Majid Al Futtaim Leisure to provide residents and visitors of Abu Dhabi another adrenaline first! This also allows us to provide a unique sponsorship opportunity for interested companies to advertise on the slope itself."

Last year's event attracted over 19,000 visitors to the festivals over three days. The 2009 festival runs from the 8th - 10th October at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and is open to the general public. Free buses will run from major malls in Abu Dhabi to the festival and competitions onsite will give visitors to the show a chance to win over $20,000 worth of adventure holidays and adventure and adrenaline sports equipment. The ticket price of Dhs50 for adult and Dhs25 for children (under 16) allows entry to the show, the ability to try all of the adrenaline sports on offer.

A new report on the Xanadu complex in New Jersey, USA reports that the development's backers remain optimistic that the mega-mall which includes North America's first indoor snow centre will open next year as previously announced.

The indoor snow centre and most of the other facilities at Xanadu have been built and are more-or-less ready to open, but opening which had been planned for this year has been delayed due to a number of factor, primarily the world economic slowdown and its consequences for the likely success of the facility.

Testing of snow-making equipment in the centre is reported to be scheduled to take place from August 3rd to 14th. The new rail link to the complex opened on Sunday, July 26th.

Ghana Ski Team In Canada

The Olympic Games have the power to generate some extraordinary stories. Just think of Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards at Calgary, AB, at the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary, AB, or the Canadian men's hockey team striking gold in 2002 in Salt Lake City, UT, USA. Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong—an African skier who lives in the UK and is known as the "Snow leopard of Ghana"—hopes to add his tale to that list at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, BC, next year.

Nkrumah-Acheampong and his family—in this case his wife, son, daughter and niece—are the second group to fly to Canada this summer as part of the Canadian Tourism Commission's (CTC) "Connecting with Canadians" program. The CTC and its national tourism partners are organizing authentic Canadian experiences for Olympic and Paralympic athletes and their families leading up to the 2010 Winter Games. In this instance, CTC-UK helped coordinate the visit.

Nkrumah-Acheampong first got the ski bug in a most unlikely location: the southern commuter town of Milton Keynes, UK. After a childhood travelling from one country to another—Ghana, Scotland, Zambia, Nigeria and Benin—a job at the Milton Keynes indoor ski dome set him on the path to the Games. He and his family also winter each year in Pampeago–Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Nkrumah-Acheampong's clan will start on July 22 with a five-day stay in Whistler, BC, organized in conjunction with Tourism Whistler and Tourism British Columbia. (It should be somewhat warmer than when he returns to compete in February 2010.) Then, it's off to eastern Canada, in partnership with Tourism Quebec, to take in Montréal, Québec City and Mont Tremblant, QC. A local TV crew will be on hand to film the Nkrumah-Acheampongs' adventures.

The trip is all part of CTC's 2010 Winter Games tourism strategy: to boost awareness of Canada's tourism brand—"Canada. Keep exploring"—and enhance Canada's image as a premier tourism destination.

Nkrumah-Acheampong remains humbled by the whole experience, saying he only set his sights on the 2010 Winter Games against his better judgment.

"I worked as hard as I could, coupled with being a husband, dad, manager, racer, technical man and PR manager for myself," he says. "I can only thank God for this gift of being an Olympian he has granted me."

New Slow Skiing At Davos
Started by User in Ski News, 5 Replies
The traditional ski region of Schatzalp/Strela at Davos will reopen in December for the winter 2009/10 season after a period of closure.

The operators of the Schatzalp funicular wants to offer the area to skiers who prefer their winter sport "slow and easy."

The bottom station of the Schatzalp/Strela ski area is right in the centre of Davos Platz. From there the Schatzalp funicular takes only four minutes to reach Schatzalp, from where the journey to the popular ski area will continue by chairlift and draglift.

The revamped ski area will include two fairly easy pistes and a link from the adjoining Parsenn ski area to the Strela Pass, only negotiable on skis.

The earlier very popular downhill run from Schatzalp to Davos Platz (Guggerbach run) will also be open again, as will the Restaurant Strelapass, which has been carefully renovated.

"Schatzalp/Strela is intended as a place for those who prefer tranquillity tinged with a touch of nostalgia." Said a Davos spokesperson.

Salomon has launched a new range of skis especially designed to provide optimum performance in the park or pipe.

The new Suspect Skis feature Salomon's 'Double Edge Armor' which has been specially designed for intense park and pipe use and consists of an extremely resistant polyethylene fibre cord, cross-laced between the ski edges for less edge depression and wrenching.

This fibre is the world's strongest fibre - five times stronger than steel.

Competent on piste too, it's teamed with a full wood core from tip to tail for a powerful rebound, plus vibration filtering.
