Brimster,
I was wondering about why the skis were left at the bottom of the chairlift as well. It sounds rather as though they were all told to take their skis off and put them there for some reason, at the end of the lesson, before they went back to their chalet/apartment/hotel.

But I can't think why - unless it was because they all went into a cafe for a drink or something together, and the others went back and collected their skis. I've always thought it was very curious the way people just leave their skis outside cafes without locking them up or anything, but I do it as well because everyone else is doing it (and mine are only hires skis!).

And people do leave their skis by the gondola, but in a locker, so maybe it was some confusion over the French/English translation?

And another thing - I have been on a sailing course, for example, and you do just leave your dinghy on the beach, for someone else to put away - and I was a bit worried about that, because I used to have my own dinghy and I'd never have just left it on the beach.

As Silverflora says, learning what's normal/protocol in a new sport isn't always easy. And I guess in ski-ing it varies quite a bit from resort to resort.

I just thought that was a little odd.

Tony - it just shows how sensible (and probably desperate) they are :D

I hope they get some more skis okay, and don't have to pay 300 euros for them. What an awful thing to happen on your first ski holiday. It's sort of like going pony trekking and forgetting to tie up your horse and then in the morning having no horse because it had wandered off and no-one had told you that horses do that sometimes.

Dustyfog,
There is a map on here: http://www.j2ski.com/ski_resorts/Airports/Ski_Resorts_Near_Grenoble_Map.html

I use the Altibus map when I'm looking to see where the major resorts are:

Would you leave your handbag at the chair lift ????

Ian - I don't own a handbag - never have (another feminist thing). I keep my money in my jacket pocket. Keeping one's valuables in a handbag has always struck me as totally ridiculous and impractical. Do you have a handbag?

But as I said, I have done lots of other totally stupid things.

Come to think of it, I have left my hired skis in a smashed up locker without a lock in the ski lockers at our apartment - because they had big signs up saying we weren't allowed to keep them in the room and I didn't know what else to do. But the next day I went to the estate agents to ask them about it and they said we could keep them in our room until maintenance had fixed the locker (which they never did the whole week we were there).

Organising a large group
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 10 Replies
I haven't organised a group ski holiday, but I have organised groups for other things, and it's simply amazing the way some people drop out at the last minute, and others 'forget' to pay one back.

If I was doing it I'd totally forget about group discounts and just organise the flights, resort, chalet etc. and get them to pay for themselves. I would have thought someone like igluski or one of the major TO's would hold places until everyone had paid (in, say, a three day window). In fact, one of them might even still give a discount if all they have to do is accept money off the individuals and other than that they've only had to deal with one person.

And it would be too awful to have to deal with everyone whingeing about the standard of accommodation or whatever that you'd booked for them. If they have to pay directly themselves they might look at what they were getting, and hence take some responsibility for the holiday. It's very difficult to please everybody (look how we all have different opinions on here, on chalets versus s/c etc.)

Best of luck with it,

Bandit,
Thanks for that horrifying story

I look forward to seeing the photos of the rock stuck in the helmet :D

I think if it was me, I'd have fainted from the shock. He was so lucky he was wearing a helmet.

You could probably sell the photo for a fortune to the helmet manufacturers

Report on buying my new ski boots

Hi Cem,
Thanks for your input. I hope my description of my boot fitting was reasonably accurate. I was a bit tired at the time and, naturally (!) I didn't make notes at the time.
