The Guardian report the death of an RAF serviceman during a training exercise, when he and two others were struck by an avalanche.

The avalanche was triggered this afternoon at an altitude of 5,000 feet as they were skiing down the Riedbergerhorn mountain in the Bavarian Alps.

Two of the servicemen, part of a 27-strong group of personnel on a week-long exercise, were rapidly dug out of the snow but the third was found unconscious.

Attempts to revive him failed and paramedics brought in by helicopter later declared him dead, said a police spokesman.

The Bavarian Alps are home to the Alpine Training Centre (ATC), which is the focal point for all 'Adventurous Training' activities undertaken by Britain's armed forces in southern Germany. The ATC runs courses in canoeing, mountaineering, skiing and paragliding, with winter training courses taking place between January and April.

An MoD spokesman said: "It is with great sadness the Ministry of Defence must confirm that an RAF service person has been killed in Oberstdorf, Bavaria today."
