Altitude sickness when skiing?
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 31 Replies
Hi Finn,
We had quite a long discussion on this subject several months ago. The thread was supposed to be about motion sickness, but a lot of other stuff (as usual!) crept into it, including some very useful information on altitude sickness.

Obergurgl - link to Hochgurgl

Hi,
We went to Obergurgl a few years ago, and at the time I was only ski-ing on blues or very easy reds. I seem to remember that there was supposed to be a short blue linking run to that express gondola.

Anyway, when we skied it I found it horribly difficult for my level of ability and it rather frightened me. However, we managed it okay, skied Hochgurgl and came back by bus. The bus is very easy to get, it's the same one that goes around Obergurgl as it's running on a continuous loop.

It may depend on snow conditions of course. When we went there was very little snow and it was quite icy and the slope down to the express gondola was quite steep.

I hope you have a great time, whether you take the bus to Hochgurgl or ski over :D

You poor thing Rossyhead.

I think it's very difficult to be sure when you're likely to be fit enough to ski again. But if I was you I'd definitely wait a bit before booking anything, at least until after the screw comes out in 4 weeks time. I expect you will need physio as well after the break has healed (usually about 6 weeks). My daughter broke her arm and it was about 3 months before she had the full use of it again, my toe only took about 5 weeks, but my shoulder took about 9 months.

Realistically, I think you might be safer thinking about Easter instead of Christmas to go ski-ing.

Best of luck for a speedy recovery!

skiing as a couple

Well, those all sound very good deals - Tony, Ian and Coop :D

So, I currently spend the most on my ski holiday

I'm sure there must be other J2skiers who spend far more than I do.

But we don't seem to have progressed much with helping the OP find something cheap in Morzine/Avoriaz

How about some prices from everyone? How much do you budget for?

As I've said before, we spent £1100 per person on our last ski holiday, not including groceries we bought for our self-catered apartment. But this did include lessons and ski hire and it was Feb half-term in Courchevel.

I would have said myself it would be difficult to do it for less than £1000 per person per holiday if you were totally honest about everything - like adding in the cost of gear (new ski boots, socks, jackets whatever) and incidentals like airport parking, food and drink bought during the holiday etc.

I think ski holidays are very expensive - but I'm still going on one

Hi Nelly,
It's nice to see you getting so excited again about ski-ing :D

Vik100,
I bought new boots about 6 months ago, and I also wondered about the half size issue. Apparently it is true that they don't make the outer part of the boot, the shell, in half sizes and it's only the liner that makes the difference.

I wrote a full report on my boot fitting experience here:

Best of luck with getting nice comfy new boots :D

Oh, and if anyone is interested, my toe-nail seems to have grown back okay but it hasn't quite reached the point where it needs to be trimmed, 6 months after I broke my toe.
