Valmeinier nightlife sounds very similar to Chamrousse which was non-existent. Having said that, went last Easter (2nd week) and there was still plenty of snow and no queues. Perfect for intermediates, advanced skiers might get bored - the one challenging black run/itinerary involved a lengthy walk out as the lift had been closed for some time! Had an excellent time though, was nice to be away from the mega-resorts with obsene prices and queues!

Tony,
As has already been said, Wengen is very pretty but depending on ability it might not be right for you. The 3/4 ski areas in Wengen are all aimed at the intermediate skier, with the exception of the Schilthorn area (James Bond film area - well worth a trip up the cable car for views of the Monch, Eiger and Jungfrau mountains). Also, with the exception Kleine Scheidegg, the amount of terrain is limited and trying to do more than 1 ski area in a day is impractical. Sorry to sound like i'm putting a downer on what is a great resort, it's a perfect resort for the intermediate skier but limited for more advanced skiers. Also with the exception of First, it's absolutely awful for complete beginners (no progression runs). Hope this helps. |

It may say that it only takes 20 to 30 repetitions to learn a new skill, but it take 10,000 repetitions in order to make it a natural, instictive reaction |

Big White would be a better bet, their season runs longer a friend of mine taught there last winter and was working until May, when I was working in tremblant, our season finished second week of April. The weather will be warm in whatever resort you choose, spring skiing in Canada is not very different from spring skiing in Europe. Except the huge difference in snowfall )

Chambery Airport to Alpe D'Huez - any car hire advice please?

In a group I agree it's easier and cheaper to hire a car, however, in a couple it might be cheaper to get the train/coach, Easter last year, I got the train from Chambery to Grenoble (8 euros) and then a coach up to Chamrousse for 3.50 euros and the alpe d'huez was the same cost, but i guess for a suprise trip driving is a lot easier and more romantic.
