Tony,
I don't think I'm that unlucky, as compared with other people, but I am quite a good story teller :D Billip, The report and my update are here: http://www.j2ski.com/ski-chat-forum/posts/list/48/8320.page I got 50 euros off the price of ski and boot hire for my next ski holiday, because of having my own boots, so financially I suppose it will take 8 ski holidays before I break even. I still think hiring is a very good option, as long as you go for quality skis and boots, but I do like my new boots :D Now, back to getting fit for ski-ing. Ally |

Hi Rossyhead,
I'm glad you've got somewhere booked, and you've got a back up plan just in case! Your leg looks a lot better in the second photo than in the first (the stitches have healed really well), although it still looks quite swollen. I went on a ski holiday 2 weeks after I broke my shoulder, knowing that I wouldn't be able to ski, and it was rather frustrating, but not nearly as bad as I'd thought because there were still things I could do. Best of luck, and take care of your leg :D Ally |

I wear those special goggles made to go over your glasses (OTG goggles).
I would have thought, if you want to know which sort your old goggles are, you'd just have to (very carefully) try putting them on over your glasses. My OTG goggles stick out more than the ordinary sort, leaving enough room for the glasses. In my opinion, the big drawback to the OTG type is that, because they stick out, I can't see my skis when I'm ski-ing because my field of vision is quite restricted by the goggles. But I have, finally, got used to them now. Buying a helmet helped quite a bit because the helmet helps to keep the goggles in positon (it's got a fixing point at the back) and when I'm not using them my ordinary glasses act as sun glasses (because they're reactolites) and I can put my goggles up on my helmet. I would have thought you'd be more comfortable with contact lenses and sun glasses. But if you decide to go for the OTG's I would suggest trying them on in the shop, and seeing if you can manage with the restricted field of vision, rather than buying them on the internet. Ally |

There are some runs below the tree line in Obergurgl, and more next door in Hochgurgl which are easily accessed either by bus or by the Hochgurgl express gondola.
The ski area is small, 110 km of runs. But you can pay 10 euros extra on your lift pass to have a day's ski-ing in Solden as long as you pay it at the beginning when you take out the pass. http://www.obergurgl.com/main/EN/GG/WI/skigebiet/skipasspreise/kombi_card/index.html I know some people did go over to Solden to ski, so I should imagine there is a public bus but I don't actually know. You could e-mail the Obergurgl tourist board to check. Ally |

Brooksy, my foot is feeling much better now, thanks. I put ice and voltarol on it, and rested it.
It just appalled me that I could hurt it in such a stupid way. I had a PC plus keyboard, speakers and mouse in the suitcase and I was carrying the monitor in my other hand, and I had to get off the pavement into the road to get around a pile of rubbish on the pavement when I ran over my own foot with my suitcase. But I think it will be a couple of days before I start my running training  Ally |

Obergurgl has nice long blue runs, and no worry about whether there will be enough snow - although it is pretty expensive.

Kate - you sound amazingly fit! Well done for keeping it up :D
Coop - how on earth do you manage to run as far as that? I thought I was doing quite well to manage a 6 mile walk! The most important thing to note about getting fit for ski-ing is to wrap yourself in cotton wool for the last 6 weeks or so before the holiday  You don't want to break your leg like Rossyhead, or get an ear infection like I did the week before you fly. I now have to add walking long distances trundling a very heavy suitcase to the other things (like ski-ing on a dry slope) that I'm not going to do less than 6 weeks before my holiday. Yesterday I accidentally ran over my own foot with my suitcase and it really hurts! I could hardly walk afterwards. Luckily I'm not actually going anywhere on holiday - imagine how dreadful it would have been if I'd been off ski-ing and I couldn't ski because I'd ran over my foot with my suitcase  Ally |
