End of April in Megeve

Tin Pot,
I agree with Old Andy. I've never skied Megeve, but I am thinking about going to St Gervais (next door) and all the reviews I've read say that Megeve doesn't have a very good snow record and not to go there very early or late in the season.

If you are serious about the ski-ing (rather than the shopping etc. which Megeve is apparently pretty good for) then I'd suggest you go somewhere else at the end of April, like Obergurgl in Austria.

You may be lucky with the snow in Megeve at that time of year, but the odds are you won't.

Ski club of GB forecasts 12 cm of snow between Monday and Friday for Courchevel, and getting very cold for next Tuesday (down to minus 25 with wind chill and freezing down to 250m).
J2Ski says 14 cm of snow between Monday and Friday.

It's definitely looking like it's going to snow :D

Eggman,
I hope you and everyone else get the snow you're looking for :D

I did my dancing on Saturday and have been rewarded by a 2 cm increase in the snow forecast for Courchevel for the coming week - it's currently increased to a total of 12cm for Monday to Saturday - not a lot I know but hopefully enough to improve the condition of the pistes, especially the piste down from 1850 to our apartment in 1550

So hopefully there will be no need for me to threaten the snow god with a shotgun on Wednesday

Are piste maps condensed?

Having looked at a few piste maps i am wondering what there is to attract people to certain resorts.
For example, lets take the often praised Niederau. The piste map here shows precious little runs, certainly nothing to keep me busy for a week!

Am i missing something?
I realize that off piste opens more terrain but if you only ski on piste what am i going to do after the first day?

Snapzzz,
I think piste maps do miss a lot out. I haven't been to Niederau but I know when I went to Hochgurgl (Obergurgl area) the piste map had one simple piste marked but in reality the whole huge area seemed to be piste (judging by the fact that everyone was ski-ing all over it) and in fact we wondered where the piste had gone

What isn't perhaps clear on the Niederau piste map is that it apparently (according to the website below) also has a giant slalom, a special carving run, a slalom track, and a speed track (which is why national teams go to Niederau to train) and they do a guest race every Friday. These extras alone would keep me happy for a whole week!

Oh, that's going to be a bit difficult! I'm having a family lunch starting at noon in a posh pub today. I'll have to excuse myself and go to the toilet, or something, and dance in there. I can't afford to get locked up for lunacy just now, when I'm going ski-ing in a week

What time are we supposed to start dancing today?
verbier_ski_bum wrote:It was so much snow everywhere around here at that time that it was difficult to get it wrong. Anyone could have made the same forecast for Christmas:) Fingers crossed some snow falls next week because the sky looks annoyingly clear so far.

Forecast now says 10cm of snow for Courchevel over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then sunny on Sunday - I like ski-ing in the sun :D

Crispyapplepie,
I'm sorry to hear your OH was ill and missed almost 3 days of ski-ing.

I worry about getting ill, either just before the holiday or during it. I look forward to it for so long, and it's so expensive that missing any of the ski-ing is a major tragedy! Last year I skied for two days after I broke my big toe (only I didn't know it was broken at the time - just very sore).

If you're going to end up unable to ski for whatever reason, Courchevel is a much better place in the 3 Valleys to stay than Val Thorens. I wouldn't like to actually buy anything in any of the shops (because of the outrageous prices), but window shopping can be great fun! The only bad thing is that Courchevel doesn't have a public swimming pool, presumably because many of the posh hotels have their own one, but if you're prepared to pay a very inflated price you can use a hotel one.
