Someone fell into a crevasse when we were in Tignes, in October (but the rescue services got them out okay), and I saw someone else (when I was up on the chairlift) nearly fall into another one. They have warnings posted up about how dangerous it is to go off piste on the glacier, yet people kept doing it.
Old Andy - have a great time, but, like Bandit said, keep away from the crevasses :D Ally |

I agree with Tropicana, walking up a zillion steps carrying ski gear is a very good warm up :D
Last holiday I made a point of refusing to use the lift in the apartment block and walking down the four floors to the ski locker room, and then also refusing the lift in the gondola station and walking up those stairs as well wearing ski boots and carrying skis. The other thing I try and do is get to the gondola station as soon as it opens so I'm not standing about in a queue in the cold. And then we usually have about 20 minutes spare before the lesson to either sit in a nice warm restaurant and drink hot chocolate or go for a warm-up run. And, in any case, the instructors usually take us down an easy run to begin with, as a warm up. Ally |

Alistair,
Edge to Edge are selling off their old ski hire gear. Maybe they've got something that would do, for your mysterious and amusing project? http://edge2edgeshop.co.uk/category/41/Skis Ally |

These people do short breaks at Tignes (which seems to have okay snow at the moment). If you give them a ring/e-mail them I'm sure they'll give you a price, although it won't be such a bargain as the ones Tony and I found. And EasyJet fly in to Geneva (where the chalet staff pick you up and take you to Tignes) so you might be able to swap your flights. http://www.mountainsunltd.com/chalet/chalet-hotel-les-melezes Ally |

Hi Alistair, Well, at least it will give you something to do whilst you're waiting for the start of the next European ski season  Best of luck with the skip/charity shop/carboot sale search :D I'm sure you're already keeping an eye on eBay :D Ally |

Now Ian really!
You know perfectly well I'm tea-total. All I had to drink for my lunch was de-caffeinated tea (I bring the tea-bags with me - haven't seen any in Courchevel yet). Ally |

My skis were too slow last year, and the rental ski shop put liquid wax on them for me during my lunch break. In my afternoon lesson our instructor took us straight down a black run and I found I could hardly ski at all - it was like ski-ing on snakes instead of skis - they went all over the place for the first half hour or so. I'm not going to use liquid wax again. This year I gave the skis in overnight for a proper waxing and they were fine - went faster and I could still control them - no snakes this time! :D
I would say the proper wax worked for about three days before beginning to wear off, whereas (fortunately) the effect of the liquid wax had pretty much worn off by the end of the afternoon. Ally |
