Some interesting points being raised here...

andymol2 wrote:As for newbies not skiing down the last run? If the run is within their safe ability why not

Absolutely. Same rule applies to any level of skier; if you're confident that you're safe, then have a go.

It was a long time ago (think dinosaurs) but I still remember goading myself in a nervous snowplough along a Blue path - and really appreciating the better skiers giving me plenty of room (and tapping their skis together to let me know they were there!).

If the run home is clogged up with beginners then just chill; relax and enjoy the view and let them get down at their own pace. Usually they'll have learnt something and will have more confidence next time round - confidence they wouldn't gain by taking the lift.

Tony - sounds like you might have been a little out of your comfort zone on Le Tunnel but you still did it; and I'll bet you'd have found it easier on a second run, having proved to yourself that you didn't die!

...on the "stem" turn... the closely related "step" turn is included in one of Warren Smith's DVDs as a fallback (if your confidence goes) on steeps; to be used when you're in a tight spot and not yet sure enough of your jump turns. It's just one more technique that can sometimes come in handy.
Which of these should I hire?

I've been loving the BBRs in powder this season but would still take the Tornado Ti in preference if I had to choose a single "all mountain" ski.

Glad they worked for you. How good was your week?

Cold Weather Warning for end of January

8)

It's gonna be cold...
In recent days a couple of forum discussions have attracted contributions of a distinctly adult nature.

Nobody minds a bit of occasional banter but several posts have fallen well outside the bounds of polite conversation, and we have removed them (and associated quotes and comments).

Keep in mind - at all times - that this is a family-friendly forum and attracts snow sports enthusiasts of all ages and sensibilities.

The Forum Rules are clearly linked at the bottom of the page.

We have a reputation for being a friendly bunch; let's keep it that way and let's talk about snow and mountains! 8)

Posts that are not "family friendly" (in our opinion) will be removed without notice, warning or right of appeal. So ner.
Help - what make of mittens?

Also look for inner/under gloves - very thin, usually silk or sometimes Merino - available at many ski shops and work very well. Obviously have the advantage that you can leave them at home on the milder days.

Many technical jackets also come with glove liners attached to the sleeve, so consider those next time you're buying a new ski jacket.

HTH.
Heads up! Wrap up!

Temperatures in The Alps are set to take a bit of a dive as this week progresses, to the extent that extra care will be needed.

Most of the region is currently cooler than average for this time of year (which is not exactly warm in any case!), but much of the Austrian, French, Italian and Swiss Alps are likely to get significantly colder by the end of the week.

Temperatures are forecast to fall by at least 10C from now through to Friday; with daytime highs around -20C (or lower) possible on Friday and Saturday.

All usual advice for (very) cold weather applies :-
- Layer Up (base layers, glove inners, hoods, etc.)
- Minimise exposed skin (risk of frostbite)
- Take regular breaks
- Stay properly hydrated (alcohol doesn't help!)
- Choose gondolas rather than chair-lifts! 8)

Enjoy the amazing snow, but stay safe.

Last laugh'll be on you I reckon... nearly 3m of snow and powder in the Ski Welt at the moment; must be fabulous! 8)
Once again we can report the fall of heavy snow in many alpine areas. Last weekend in particular saw accumulations of around 1 metre (three feet) over several days, for parts of the French, Swiss and Austrian Alps. Since then clear weather has become the norm, with temperatures varying around the January averages.

Excellent skiing conditions are being reported from just about everywhere in the European Alps now.

Beyond the Alps, heavy snow has also been reported from South East Europe - Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, etc.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Further snow is expected over the next few days for just about the entire Alpine region, although the quantities are unlikely to equal those of a week ago. Some heavy falls are possible but they will likely be localized and brief.

A change to distinctly cooler weather could be on the cards for the European Alps early next week.

The forecast models are starting to indicate that early February is likely to be noticeably colder than now, with a possibility of more snow in around a weeks time.

Keep calm and carry on...
