By now you should be wearing your ski gear... just to make sure it still fits... it's never too early to get excited. 8)

An unusually clear sky in this picture Tweeted (yesterday) by the nice folk from the European Snowsport school in Zermatt...

The last week has seen additional fresh snow for much of Austria, Switzerland and the Pyrenees, including some substantial falls in the Tyrol. Sunny conditions have followed lighter snow elsewhere in Europe.

In North America, British Columbia (Canada) and Colorado (USA) have had some major snowfalls and Mount Washington has announced that it will be extending the season by a week (to April 22nd)!

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Cold weather has now given way to milder conditions in Europe, and these look set to continue for the next few days at least. Currently running around 5C above the seasonal averages, and higher in the South, temperatures should drop through the weekend before climbing again as we head into March. Spring skiing conditions will be common, so take sun-cream and light layers! The impressive snow depths in Europe (with many resorts reporting well over 2 metres of snow at altitude) will mean some great skiing as we move into the second half of the season.

There is a good possibility of some further snow in the Eastern Alps in the next week or so, although this may fall as rain at lower altitudes.

Longer term, conditions should return to mid-season averages in the first week of March.

Avalanche Safety

A word of warning... avalanches have claimed a number of lives in the past few days and anyone considering skiing out-of-bounds or off-piste should continue to exercise caution. Always take local advice before leaving marked runs, never ski alone, and always carry a transceiver, shovel and probe when off-piste.

You beat me to it Nelly; now also here on J2Ski.
If you're arriving for a chalet holiday in Les Menuires this weekend, you probably want to read this...

The following is extracted from the Les Menuires 7 Facebook page :-

Seven chalet hosts have barricaded themselves into their luxury chalet after being dismissed with immediate effect and told that they will not receive any wages.

...

Last week saw the company running 10 chalets and, in an attempt to keep up with demand, they rapidly flew in a large number of youngsters from Britain aged between 18 and 25 to help clean rooms, run the chalets and care for guests... As soon as clients left to return home to Britain, an email was despatched to all seven chalet hosts informing them of the termination of their contracts with immediate effect and telling them that they were to vacate their accommodation straight away, return all company belongings and ski passes. They were also informed that they would not receive any wages for the three week period worked or travel expenses, leaving the youngsters stranded with no money to either pay for new accommodation or make their way home.

However, unhappy with the situation and after taking advice from the local gendarmerie and Saisonnaires Office, the youngsters decided to move themselves into one of the Skithe3V luxury chalets and barricade themselves in until the company pay them what they are due. The chalet was being run by elder couple David and Hayley Haines who were also sacked without reason but were offered reduced pay. They decided to take up the cause of their younger team members, allowing them to take up residence and informling Mr Ridgers of their intentions to remain at Chalet Georgina until all of them had been paid.

Chalet Georgina is located just outside Les Menuires and has 10 luxury bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities and views of the mountains. Guests are due to arrive at the chalet this weekend for a week long ski break.

The story now appears to have gone viral (thanks to our friends at Skipedia for the heads-up) and can be followed on Facebook and Twitter, with coverage already including Natives and Snowheads.

Anyone stayed with, or due to holiday with, skithe3v?

Absolutely agree; if you trigger an avalanche then your assessment failed and you should go back and reset your thinking.
Le Dauphine is reporting that an avalanche yesterday swept away two brothers, killing one.

Two men were swept away by an avalanche yesterday at midday, in the town of Bellevaux, about twenty miles from Thonon-les-Bains (Haute Savoie).

The two men were climbing a couloir below the Pointe de Chalune, when they triggered the release of a wind slab.

Both men were carried down the couloir and then 30 metres over a rocky ledge. Witnesses raised the alarm. Upon arrival of the helicopter rescue team from the PGHM (mountain police) to Chamonix, one of the two victims had already died.

From the region

40 years old, the victim was from the local region. The second, aged 47, was evacuated to hospital in a serious condition.

An investigation was initiated by the PGHM.

The full report (in French) is here.
