i'm not keen on road biking due to the number of idiot drivers out there. However, I do try to get out on my mountain bike at least once a week. We can cycle directly from our house and have 3 or 4 circular routes from 10 to 25 miles. It's surprisingly hilly for Lincolnshire around here so it's always a good lung buster! I bought myself a lightweight hardtail a few years ago (Kona Kula Deluxe) along with all the gear. It's a pretty cheap pastime once you've got the kit and I think keeps me reasonably fit. More of an upper body workout than people might think especially when bouncing down a downhill section trying not to wipe out! i tried proper downhill biking in Tignes 2 years ago. Scared me to death. Biking blue run equivalent to a skiing black run. Biking black run equivalent to skiing off a cliff!

Christmas 2015 booked!!
Val d"Isere from 19th Dec to 26th Dec. Gone for a S/C apartment this time. ...now thinking about the J2ski trip. |

Town atmosphere can't compere to Val or Zermatt though! We like both good skiing and a good town. Hence, the reason we are highly unlikely to return to Les Arcs 1950/2000.
New Year in Zermatt this season was superb. I do accept that it is pricey though...... |

Done although I have to admit I've never considered any labels issued by tourist boards!

Hi Jaybuoy. Welcome to the forum.
Your geographical area is fairly immense and will pick up the majority of the world's resorts. Skiing at Christmas will either be expensive or very expensive depending on where you would like to go. An idea of budget would be helpful if you want some useful advice. Unless you are the new Bode Miller in waiting, variation of slopes should be fairly low down your list of priorities! You ought to be in ski lessons each morning, at least for the 1st half of the week. You are likely to feel pain in new places and by day 6 (if you were like me on my 1st ski hol), you'll be pretty knackered. Your aspirations regarding après ski will also have a major bearing on the choice of a resort. Some resorts are very quiet, some are full on until way past midnight. Another consideration is the relatively early time of year. We are likely to be skiing over Christmas and our list is very short - either Val d'Isere or Zermatt. Both have great towns with lots of character, both allow for plenty of high altitude skiing, both are expensive! |

There were lots of small children learning to ski in Hemsedal when we were there in 2010 and 2012. They had better technique than me on our 1st holiday!!
I think it's something to do with a low centre of gravity and super flexibility. Go for it! |
