Skiing while Pregnant!
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 13 Replies
When I was pregnant I continued milking the cows until the day I went into labour. For those of you who don't know, this is a pretty hazardous activity because you are very likely to get squashed, kicked or stamped on. However, we wouldn't have been able to afford to pay anyone else to do the work while I had 9 months off, so I saw it as a necessity and I was prepared to take the risk.

But a ski holiday comes into a different category because it's a leisure activity and the pregnant woman puts herself and the baby at risk for no reason other than her own enjoyment and that of her companions. Or, to put it another way, if she doesn't ski all she misses out on is 6 days of ski-ing. But if she fell badly (which may not be her fault as someone else may lose control and hit her) the consequences could be frightful. So if you simply weigh up risk versus benefit then the risks are much greater than the benefits. Plus, if she fell and then subsequently had a miscarriage even if they weren't actually connected, she'd be bound to blame herself.

So, if it was me I wouldn't ski. Apart from anything else I wouldn't be able to live with myself afterwards if anything did go wrong. In fact, I don't think I'd go on the holiday either because I'd hate to see everyone else ski-ing and not be able to take part. I'd go and find something else to do.

And, having said all that, I think it's very unlikely she would come to any harm but personally I found the responsibility of being pregnant quite stressful enough without adding to it, and I wouldn't have been able to relax and enjoy myself on the ski slope while wondering who was about to flatten me.

It was different for the female ski instructor because like me it was her job and she probably couldn't afford to give it up for several months.

Dave, I am glad you are okay. It sounds as though it was a very close shave

Iceman - that would be another good one for the romance thread

Dano-o,
I totally agree with you about Meribel. We'd stayed for a week, twice, in both Courchevel and Val Thorens and skied through Meribel, but our last holiday was the first one where we'd actually stayed in Meribel. So, we already knew that Meribel generally has the worst snow and queues of the 3 Valleys, and our stay there confirmed this view. At the end of the week my daughter summed it up perfectly by saying 'I know why people stay in Meribel - it's because it's so easy to get out of it and go to Courchevel or Val Thorens.'

The ESF ski school also seem to have the same opinion as her. We'd done lessons with them in Courchevel and Val Thorens and never needed the 3 Valleys pass (we just bought the day upgrade to ski all three valleys for the day) but the instructor in Meribel was quite adamant about how we needed the 3 Valleys pass because he was determined to take us out of Meribel.

But we really liked Orelle. Maybe it was because it was empty and beautifully quiet when we were there. And that steep section of the red run is where our instructor tested our guts to see if we were brave enough to go into the advanced group by seeing how high up we were prepared to start a schuss.

Silk socks only versus thicker socks

Iceman - I hope you wear them the right way around. There was a man in the ski hire shop in Meribel with his left foot in the one saying 'right', and his right foot in the one saying 'left'. He looked a right plonker.
Male/Female Specific Helmets

Mekka, if you like the helmet, it fits okay and it's not too expensive then don't worry about the fact that it's meant for a man.

I've got men's salopettes, ski boots, and ski jacket, and a child's ski helmet, and the skis I hired were men's as well. No-one seems to have noticed that anything was awry (or at least they've never said anything and I didn't see whole crowds of people falling over with laughter every time they saw me on a ski slope!).

My head is very small which is why the kids' helmet fits me. Some people have big heads and some have small ones and I think it's more about genetic inheritance than gender.

Congratulations to Little W for passing the Bronze with the ESF,in spite of that other useless ski school. I don't think I could. Those kids tests are terribly hard! We had a go once, in our advanced lesson, and I couldn't make my turns tight enough.

That's great news Snowbandit. I'm glad things turned around for you :D

My ski instructors have tried to teach me to actually lean on my pole when ski-ing moguls, so that the pole takes some of my weight and gives me extra stability. But I'm not very keen on doing this as it was my ski pole that broke my shoulder on the dry ski slope.
