If you are out of control what are you supposed to do to warn people below you?

That awful time I fell flat on my back in a lesson on a red run and whooshed downhill really fast totally out of control I just yelled blue murder (well it was very scary!) hoping that anyone below would hear me and get out of the way.

I suppose, legally, if I'd hit anyone it would have been my fault but morally it was just an accident - I mean I wasn't planning on falling over and hitting anyone. And I didn't know how to stop myself. And it wasn't like I was on a slope beyond my capability - I just did something wrong - goodness only knows what!

So, in Smartski's original story I would say that the 'learner' shouldn't have been on a red slope if he really was a 'learner' (depending on what standard of 'learner' he was) but that if he was out of control he couldn't avoid Smartski so it was an accident. But he and his friend shouldn't have tried to blame Smartski for it, as he was the lower skier. And I would have thought that legally, if there had been any damage/injury the other skier would have been liable for it.

Oh right Snowbandit, I am finally 'with it'

Sorry I was so slow on the uptake

Well, in that case I would consider your new idea if my children would have only been ski-ing for a half-day anyway, because I wouldn't like them to miss any ski-ing time.

If they were old enough to be able to ski all day I think I'd rather pay the extra and go in school holidays.

I know my younger daughter managed to ski all day in lessons when she was 9 years old, but I don't know about children younger than that.

Snowbandit,
I'm really sorry - I totally misunderstood what you were talking about

I am trying to get my head around this, and finding it rather difficult.

Are you saying that the government is going to stop parents taking children out of state primary schools during term time? When my kids were young it was not a problem when they were in primary school.

Snapzzz,
Once my younger daughter reached the 2 GCSE years she began bringing schoolwork with her on our ski holidays. She does it in the evenings and if I can I help her with it. For us, it's another good thing about ski holidays because the ski-ing finishes about 4 p.m. and then we've got the rest of the evening for cooking, eating, and studying in our apartment.

And, on our most recent holiday it was uni work because she had an important exam the day after we got back.

If Snowbandit's plan had involved evening classes it would have worked for us but obviously not for those parents wanting ski time away from their kids.

Piste Bashing

Trencher,
Theory number 2 was that it was because the piste-bashers were all out trying to keep the roads clear because there was so much snow.

But it was most unusual. The first day we were ski-ing, the 1st January, I don't think we went on a single piste that had been bashed and I don't think they started grooming them until our 3rd day. I imagine the nursery slopes must have been done - but I wasn't on those!

Oh - and theory number 3 was that the drivers were all out partying for New Years Eve and it took them about 3 days to get over it

Snowbandit,
I think it's a good idea, but I'm pretty sure both my daughters would have nearly killed me if I'd told them that yes we were going to a ski resort but they would be in school for half the time whilst I was ski-ing!

Piste Bashing

I noticed they weren't piste-bashing nearly as much when we were in Meribel over the New Year as compared with my previous trips to the 3 V's, and I wondered if they're doing this deliberately to keep skiers speed down. I didn't see anyone ski-ing at a 'million' miles an hour like I usually do, because it would have been impossible over all the lumps and bumps - even on the blue runs.

So, although the pistes were much more difficult and lots of people fell over, they were also safer because everyone had to go more slowly than usual. And there was hardly anyone on the one black run I did.

Brown trousers, pink jacket, white bobble hat - being rapidly caught up by Tony towards the beginning of the video?
